Jade squeezes through the knot of kids clustered at the fence, her sneakers crunching popcorn underfoot, and waves as she spots Lila waving wildly from the metal bleachers. Lila’s eyes are wide, cheeks flushed with excitement as she calls out,

“Y/N! Where were you?!? Whatever, I have news!!!”

Just as Jade flops onto the bench beside her, Jules leans in, grinning, and says,

“Lila and Chandler broke up!!!”

Xavier bounces a football on his knee, glancing between Jade and Kayla, while Zach tries to hide a smirk. The band blares a marching tune behind them, drowning out the groans from the field. Everyone leans in, waiting for Jade to react, the moment teetering between gossip and laughter, the crisp night buzzing with possibility.

Scene 1
Jade

My eyes widen in shock,

"What? Why?"

Lila leans in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, while Chandler stares pointedly at the field, his jaw tight. The air between them feels suddenly thin, like a wire stretched to its breaking point, and the nearby crowd seems to fade into a dull, rhythmic roar.

Lila

I lean in so close my hair brushes Jade's shoulder.

"You will not believe this, but he was literally caught texting his ex during the homecoming dance prep! I saw the messages pop up on his lock screen. It was totally over the second I read them."

The sudden revelation hangs in the air, sharper than the cooling evening breeze. Kayla shifts on the metal bench, her eyes darting between Jade and the stiff figure of Chandler. The stadium lights hum above, casting long, harsh shadows across the bleachers. Around them, the group sinks into a heavy, expectant silence.

Kayla

I lean back, nervously tapping my phone against my knee as I glance at Chandler.

"Wow, that is intense. Maybe we should focus on the game for a bit? The score is getting really close, and I think we all need a distraction from the drama."

Narrator

The stadium lights flicker, plunging the bleachers into a sharper, colder shadow. Chandler rises abruptly, the clatter of his sneakers against the metal echoing through the quiet. Without looking back, he strides toward the exit, leaving the group in a sudden, brittle stillness.
