Ghost Data in Neon Shadows

Current scene Director
Introduction
Narrator

Zero slides through the midnight crowd of Shibuya Circuit, brushing past a vendor hawking black-market memory chips. Her neural dampeners buzz as she tunes out the riotous colors, eyes fixed on a nondescript man standing under an acid-green awning. He glances her way, fingers fiddling with a data wafer. She feels the subtle pulse in her skull, her own hardware pinging for a handshake she doesn’t remember accepting. Rain speckles her carbon-fiber jacket. Above, the glass towers split the night with fractal reflections. The job data is supposed to be clean. Instead, her target’s face flickers with déjà vu, each line triggering a sensation like vertigo. The man's lips barely part.

"You’re late, Zero. But I knew you’d come."

Scene 1
Zero

Zero observe the surroundings and how the man act. Zero acts like she knows what to do.

Narrator

Zero’s eyes flick to the edges of the crowd, catching the jittering neon above and the steady pulse of indifferent bodies weaving around them. Kaito remains motionless, his stance too precise for a casual exchange. She steps forward, slipping into his shadow, masking her unease with a calm she doesn’t feel.

"I'm here, Kaito. Let's finish what we started."

Kaito

I catch your gaze and offer a thin, mirthless smile. With slow, deliberate fingers, I hold the data wafer out, letting the neon light catch its edge.

"Do you recognize this, Zero? It is the same one you left on my desk years ago."

Narrator

Zero’s gaze locks on the wafer. The plastic casing catches the flickering pinks and greens of the market lights, sharp and unforgiving. Ozone thickens the air as the crowd swells around them, unaware of the small, heavy object between them. Her hands remain steady. She watches his fingers closely, searching for any hint of a tremor.

Scene 2
Zero

Zero tell him that she is not quite understand what he wants.

Narrator

Zero pulls her collar tighter against the drizzle, her eyes meeting his with a hollow, searching look. She holds her ground, refusing to reach for the wafer.

"I have no desk, Kaito, and I certainly don't remember leaving anything for you. Tell me exactly what you want."

Kaito

I sigh, the sound barely audible over the market's hum.

"Memory is a luxury in this city, Zero. You once told me the Kyoto extraction was a suicide mission, yet you took it. This wafer contains the encryption key for the vault we emptied. Take it, or we both die."

Narrator

The neon from a nearby noodle stall flickers, throwing long, warped shadows over the slick pavement. Zero senses the weight of the moment, the threat hanging in the air like ozone before a storm. Kaito holds his ground, the wafer extended, his gaze steady as he waits for her to close the distance between his certainty and her blank void.

Scene 3
Zero

Zero take it, look it closely. Zero also look at the Kaito.

"What now?"

Narrator

Zero extends her hand, fingertips grazing Kaito’s as she takes the wafer. The surface is cool, humming faintly with encrypted promise. Beneath the harsh neon, she studies the intricate data patterns etched into its casing. She meets Kaito’s eyes, her expression cautious.

"What now?"

Kaito

I nod toward the shadows stretching between the stalls, my expression hardening.

"This street is too exposed, and the watchers are closing in. We move now, toward the lower maintenance tunnels. Keep that wafer shielded. If they scan its signature before we reach the terminal, we are dead."

Narrator

Zero slips the wafer deep into her jacket, the cold metal burning against her skin. She watches Kaito pivot from the awning, his movements smooth, honed by habit. His eyes flick toward a shadow shifting near a nearby stall, his jaw tightening into a sharp, jagged line.

Scene 4
Zero

Zero follow Kaito while also scanning the surroundings.

Narrator

Zero follows Kaito through the tangled maze of alleys, her boots barely making a sound on the slick, oil-streaked concrete. She keeps her head down, eyes flicking between the stuttering neon signs overhead and the dark spaces between trash-strewn shipping containers. Behind them, a heavy boot scrapes metal as Renji emerges from the shadows, his hand hovering near a holstered sidearm.

Renji

I emerge from the shadows, hand clenched tightly around my weapon.

"Stop right there,"

I growl, my voice slicing through the damp air.

"I know exactly what you are carrying, and those tunnels won't save you. Drop the wafer and walk away, or nobody leaves this alley alive."

Narrator

Zero halts mid-stride as the damp air chills sharply with Renji’s arrival under the flickering streetlamp. Kaito stiffens, shoulders tightening, ready to pivot toward the new threat. The alley shrinks around them, the sharp tang of ozone mixed with decay thickening the tension as the standoff tightens.

Kaito

I step slightly in front of Zero, palms open and raised in a placating gesture.

"Renji, you are chasing a ghost. This wafer is corrupted and useless to anyone without the original biometric key. Why die for a corporate dead end when we could split the salvage?"

Narrator

Renji pauses, knuckles whitening on his weapon’s grip as the offer lingers in the thick, humid air. His eyes flick toward the dark entrance of the maintenance tunnel, narrowing with sharp calculation. A distant siren wails, its echo bouncing off wet metal walls. Zero feels the wafer’s cold vibration against her chest. The alley falls into a tense, suffocating silence.

Scene 5
Zero

I toss a smoke grenade into the alley and bolt toward the maintenance entrance.

Narrator

Zero yanks a canister from her belt, her fingers closing around the cold trigger with practiced speed. She hurls it into the alley; a thick chemical fog blooms instantly, swallowing the narrow passage in blinding haze. Without hesitation, she lunges toward the maintenance entrance, her boots pounding against the damp concrete as she vanishes into the gloom.

Kaito

I dive into the gloom after her, the heavy steel door slamming shut behind us with a resonant boom. I trigger the magnetic lock, sealing out the damp street air.

"Move faster, Zero. We need to reach the sub-level terminal before the security sweep reaches this sector."
