Heartbeats in the Rain: The Forks Rebound

Current scene Director
Introduction
Narrator

Phoebe stalks down the high school hallway, boots squeaking on the waxed tile, her chipped black nails clenching a battered notebook. Ahead, Edward leans against the trophy case, unreadable eyes trained on the rain-streaked windows as students swirl around him. Bella lingers nearby, backpack hugged to her chest, glancing up with uncertainty. Phoebe slides in beside Edward, her red hair damp at the edges.

"You look like you could use a distraction,"

she says, voice low, bold. Edward doesn’t flinch, but his jaw sets as if bracing for a storm. Bella’s gaze sharpens. The bell rings. Phoebe holds his stare, the bright hallway lights flickering above them. Rain drums harder against the glass, and for a split second, everything beyond Forks High vanishes. Edward’s reply hangs in the air, taut and dangerous. Phoebe feels the electricity, senses the fracture lines between them all, and knows she’s already made herself part of this story.

Scene 1
Phoebe

Bella steps forward, her eyes darting between us as she prepares to intervene.

Narrator

Bella slides into the narrow space between them, her presence a quiet wall of defiance. She shifts her weight, hands trembling slightly as her eyes flick from Edward's rigid posture to Phoebe's steady gaze. The fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting long, sharp shadows across the linoleum floor.

Bella Swan

I step forward, knuckles white as I grip my bag, determined not to let my voice tremble this time.

"Phoebe, stop it. You have no idea what you are stepping into, and this has nothing to do with you. Why are you even here?"

Narrator

The hallway tightens, the air turning sharp and cold. Students part around them, instinctively avoiding the charged space. Edward stays pressed against the trophy case, his gaze sliding between the two women with a predator’s calm. His hands curl slowly into fists at his sides.

I push away from the glass, my movements fluid and abrupt.

"Enough. Bella, please, leave this be."

I glance at Phoebe, my expression hardening into a mask of cold indifference.

Narrator (edited)

Edward's sudden movement sends his footsteps echoing down the hallway. Bella stays rooted, her shoulders sagging as the tension eases.

Scene 2
Phoebe

"What? Haha, I'm confused. I was just going to ask Edward what he's doing. What are you Bella doing here?"

I say acting like nothing is wrong. Why is she being so dramatic for no reason.

"You know, I'm new to this school and it's hard to make friends when people are.. "

Narrator

Phoebe laughs sharply, slicing through the heavy silence of the hallway. She shrugs, the fabric of her flannel shifting with the motion, and fixes Bella with a look of mock innocence.

"What? Haha, I'm confused. I was just going to ask Edward what he's doing. What are you Bella doing here?"

She tilts her head, eyes following the line of Bella's jaw before returning to the vampire.

"You know, I'm new to this school and it's hard to make friends when people are.."

She lets the words hang in the air, waiting for a response.

Bella Swan

My face flushes, humiliation and fear mingling in a fierce burn. I step closer, my voice a barely audible whisper, yet edged with sudden, desperate clarity.

"Friends? You do not want to be his friend, Phoebe. You have no idea what you are inviting into your life."

Narrator

Bella's warning echoes sharply against the lockers, brittle and clear. The hallway falls into an uneasy stillness, the usual chaos retreating into a tense vacuum. Edward stands frozen, his gaze locked on a spot just beyond Phoebe, his expression unreadable as he takes in the growing friction.

Edward Cullen (edited)

I step between them, my presence a cold, solid barrier.

"Bella, your concern is misplaced."

Narrator (edited)

Bella remains frozen near the trophy case.

Scene 3
Phoebe

Sorry guys, I heard you broke up. I didn't mean to make it award for you Bella, but there's no need to berate your ex to people. Says alot more about you than him. I'm sure Edward is a nicer person than you portray him right now

Narrator

Phoebe pulls her flannel sleeves down, her expression sharpening as she locks eyes with Bella. She exhales slowly, a thin, mocking smile curving her lips.

"Sorry guys, I heard you broke up. I didn't mean to make it awkward for you Bella, but there's no need to berate your ex to people. Says a lot more about you than him. I'm sure Edward is a nicer person than you portray him right now."

She leans back against a locker, arms crossed, waiting for their response.

Bella Swan (edited)

I feel the heat rise in my cheeks, stinging like a slap. I tighten my grip on my backpack until my fingers ache.

"You are dangerously ignorant, Phoebe. Walk away before you lose more than just your pride."

Narrator

Edward’s eyes narrow, the golden irises darkening to a bruised mahogany. He shifts away from the trophy case, his movements unnaturally fluid as he steps into the narrow gap between the two women. The temperature in the hallway seems to plummet, the air vibrating with an unseen, predatory intensity that makes the nearby lockers rattle.

Edward Cullen (edited)

I catch Bella’s gaze, my expression unyielding.

"This ends now, Bella. Leaver her alone."

Narrator (edited)

Bella walks away dramatically

Scene 4
Phoebe

I just stand and watch Edward.

"I'm sorry if my desire to be friendly is not welcomed. I'm not sure if you know how it's like to feel.. alone"

Narrator

Phoebe holds her ground, the fluorescent lights catching the steady green of her eyes. She keeps her gaze fixed on Edward, refusing to break the tense silence.

"I'm sorry if my desire to be friendly is not welcomed. I'm not sure if you know how it's like to feel.. alone,"

she says, her voice lingering in the nearly empty hallway.

Edward Cullen (edited)

I turn my head toward the window, watching the rain blur the world outside.

Narrator

The heavy oak doors of the high school swung shut with a final, echoing thud, leaving Phoebe alone in the sudden stillness of the corridor. Dust motes drifted in the narrow beam of gray light filtering through a nearby window. The scent of ozone and wet pavement lingered where Edward had stood just moments before. Phoebe remained motionless, the silence pressing against her ears until the distant, muffled voice of a teacher lecturing in a nearby classroom broke the quiet.

Bella Swan now gone
Scene 5
Phoebe

I follow Edward out into the rain to demand he explain his cold behavior.

Narrator

Phoebe pushed through the heavy school doors, the cold Forks afternoon air biting through her flannel. Rain slicked the pavement, blurring the world in shades of gray. Edward stood at the edge of the parking lot, his figure unnervingly still in the downpour. She hurried, boots splashing through muddy runoff.

"Wait!"

she called, her voice barely carrying over the wind. She stopped a few feet behind him, rain plastering her hair to her cheeks, and fixed her gaze on his back.

"I am tired of the games, Edward. Why are you acting like this? You can't just turn on and off whatever it is you're feeling."

Edward Cullen (edited)

I stop, rain plastering my hair to my forehead. I turn slowly, movements deliberate and rigid.

"You are searching for depth in a shallow pool, Phoebe. You are wandering into a darkness you cannot comprehend,."

Narrator

Phoebe stands still in the rain, cold seeping into her skin. The silence between them is heavy, broken only by water dripping from the pine branches above. Edward remains motionless, his eyes fixed on the misty tree line rather than her face. His posture is tense, as if bracing against the wind. A low thunder rumbles from the coast, shaking the wet earth beneath their boots.
