The Rabbit's Leap: Recruitment at Seireitei

Current scene Campaign
Introduction
Narrator

Koyuki Usagui darts between the legs of taller recruits, her bare feet slapping against the stone courtyard. She clutches her wooden practice sword tightly, eyes darting toward the row of formidable captains perched on the reviewing platform. The morning sun glints on their ornate uniforms, making them look even more intimidating. A stern instructor shouts her name, beckoning her forward. Koyuki grins mischievously, skipping past a nervous boy twice her size, before presenting herself with a dramatic bow. She feels the weight of a hundred eyes, some curious, some dismissive, focused on her tiny frame. The instructor gestures to a painted circle on the ground.

"Show us your spiritual pressure, Usagui!"

he commands. Koyuki draws a deep breath, the scars on her arms tingling. She plants her feet and lets her reiatsu surge, determined not to be overlooked today.

Scene 1
Koyuki Usagui

I focus my energy and release my reiatsu in a playful, golden wave, aiming to catch the attention of the captains watching from the platform.

Narrator

Koyuki stands firm in the center of the painted circle, her small frame unwavering. She closes her eyes, drawing on the warmth of her own spirit, and pushes outward. A ripple of golden, shimmering reiatsu pulses from her, spreading through the courtyard like a gentle, warm breeze. She looks toward the platform with a wide, expectant grin.

Kenshin

I cross my arms, eyes narrowing as the golden ripple fades.

"A flashy display, Usagui. But in the field, style serves no one if the core remains unrefined. Do not mistake a spark for a wildfire. Can you hold that pressure steady, or will it vanish the moment things get difficult?"

Narrator

Koyuki stands motionless, the golden shimmer of her aura calming into a steady, controlled hum. She meets the instructor's stern gaze, lifting her chin just enough to show resolve. Nearby, a few recruits shift uneasily, whispering as they watch the small girl hold her focus under Kenshin's scrutiny.

Ren now present
Scene 2
Koyuki Usagui

I glance at the captains on the platform, hoping to catch one of their eyes.

Narrator

Koyuki tilted her head, ignoring the instructor’s stern stance as she scanned the elevated platform. The sunlight cast the captains in shadow, turning them into dark silhouettes against the gleaming white towers of Seireitei. Nearby, Ren tightened his grip on his practice sword and muttered,

"Keep your eyes front, kid, unless you want to get disqualified."

Kenshin

I step forward, boots thudding heavily against the stone.

"Usagui, your eyes wander when they should be fixed on the threat before you. If you cannot maintain your focus under a simple gaze, you have no place here. Drop the stance and prepare to defend yourself against me."

Narrator

Koyuki tightened her grip on the wooden blade, her knuckles turning white as the courtyard’s air thickened. Kenshin advanced with the fluid precision of a veteran warrior, his presence locking her in place. Ren lingered at the edge, his breath catching as he sensed the fierce battle about to unfold.

Scene 3
Koyuki Usagui

I grin and hold my ground, testing if I can parry his first strike with my wood, and I'm still keeping my reiatsu strong

Narrator

Koyuki flashed a defiant grin, planting her feet firmly as Kenshin surged forward. She clenched the wooden practice blade tighter, channeling her golden reiatsu into a solid, bracing force. His strike came down with brutal, measured weight. She aimed to meet the wood with her own. Just as their blades were about to clash, a loud commotion burst from the sidelines. A tall, pale-skinned recruit lost his footing, stumbling into the circle and sending a stack of training gear crashing with a thunderous clash of wood against stone. Kenshin halted mid-strike, his eyes flicking toward the chaotic spill.

Jiro now present
Kenshin

I freeze, my blade inches from the girl. Pivoting, my gaze sears the stumbling fool.

"Incompetence is a contagion,"

I growl, voice trembling with contained rage.

"Usagui, stand aside. This display of idiocy ends now before someone loses a limb."

Narrator

Jiro scrambled on the stone floor, his face pale as he stammered an apology into the tense air. The courtyard, once locked on the recruits’ potential, fell silent, broken only by the scattered training gear. A sharp draft swept across the ground, carrying the scent of ozone and dust. Kenshin remained poised, his gaze shifting between the girl and the fallen mess. From the observation platform, a new figure approached the railing, a man with stark white hair and a thin, knowing smile that seemed out of place in the heavy trial atmosphere.

Kazuki now present
Jiro

I scramble to my feet, hands trembling as I clutch the fallen bokuto.

"I am so sorry, I did not mean to interfere with the match. My footing just slipped."

I stumble backward, nearly tripping over my own robes again, my eyes darting toward the cold, judging gaze of the senior recruit.

Scene 4
Koyuki Usagui

I plant my feet and call out to Kenshin, asking him to resume our spar.

Narrator

Koyuki planted her feet firmly, brushing off the dust that still hung in the air from the accident. She lifted her chin, meeting the instructor’s gaze with unwavering resolve.

"Instructor, the distraction is gone. Let us finish this spar!"

Before Kenshin could respond, soft, deliberate clapping rang out from the observation platform, pulling every gaze away from the ground.

Kazuki

I descend the stairs with rhythmic, unhurried steps, my gaze locked on the girl.

"Patience is a virtue, though rarely found in those so eager to bleed,"

I remark, stepping between them.

"Kenshin, let us see if her spirit matches that fiery tongue. Continue the spar, but with more... nuance."

Narrator

The courtyard fell into a heavy silence as the man positioned himself between them. A sharp, biting chill swept through the air, turning the recruits' sweat into cold beads. Above, the sky shifted to an eerie violet shade. Kazuki remained perfectly still, his grin broadening. The ground trembled beneath their feet, a deep, steady thrum that rattled teeth and cracked the stone tiles.

Kenshin

I tighten my grip until my knuckles ache, eyes locked on the shifting sky.

"This is a recruitment trial, not a playground for your games, Kazuki. If you wish to test her, take your turn, but do not undermine the structure of these grounds."

I steady myself, preparing my stance.

Narrator

A sudden, high-pitched ringing shattered the courtyard’s silence, cutting through the tremor. The violet sky cracked open, releasing a pale, spectral fog that curled around the recruits’ ankles. Without warning, the training weapons spun upward, caught in a small vortex of spiritual pressure that defied the stone floor’s gravity.

Scene 5
Koyuki Usagui

I grip my wooden sword and lunge at Kenshin, ignoring the swirling fog.

Narrator

Koyuki clenched the worn hilt tightly, her spirit flaring to push back the creeping cold. She surged forward, a streak of golden resolve targeting the veteran’s side. As she neared, the violet fog twisted violently, solidifying into sharp, crystalline shards that snapped toward them both. The ground heaved beneath their feet, sending stone and dust flying as the training vortex roared with fresh, hostile energy.

Kenshin

I drive my practice blade into the ground, sending a shockwave of reiatsu that shatters the nearest shards.

"Back, all of you! This is no longer a drill."

I shift my stance, palm extended toward the swirling vortex.

"Usagui, protect the flank while I neutralize this anomaly!"

Narrator

Koyuki planted her feet firmly against the roaring vortex, her boots scraping deep furrows into the cracked stone beneath her. The air chilled sharply as the spectral fog whipped around, etching frost patterns across the training ground. Kazuki stepped forward, his white hair flaring wildly in the gust. His hands moved swiftly, tracing a complex, glowing sign that stopped the shards in midair. He glanced toward the platform just as a massive, obsidian shadow loomed over the Seireitei walls.

Kazuki

I tilt my head, my eyes following the encroaching obsidian mass with genuine fascination.

"How delightful to see the rules of our little stage ignored so boldly."

I flick my wrist, weaving a web of light to bind the volatile shards, then turn toward the sky.

"Try to keep up, Kenshin."

Narrator

The obsidian shadow surged forward, and with a deafening crack, the barrier enclosing Seireitei groaned under the strain. A massive, jagged tear ripped through the white sky, spilling ink-black rain that hissed sharply as it struck the stone. Chaos erupted on the training ground, the air growing heavy and thick with the scent of stagnant water and ancient decay.
