Glitter, Rumors, and the Hidden Reel

Current scene Director
Introduction
Narrator

Jewel swipes her glittery phone screen, the hum of the Euphoria High bathroom’s flickering lights crawling down her spine. She checks the old camcorder wedged between soap dispensers, making sure the lens is hidden. Drew leans against the cracked tile, her hood pulled low, rolling a joint with methodical fingers. Carly’s voice bounces off the stall doors, pitched high with nervous tension, as she reapplies lip gloss at the mirror. Jewel bites her lip and glances at Drew, the urge to capture every secret moment buzzing in her chest. A notification pops up, her phone is trying to sync with the school WiFi, uploading files. Heart pounding, Jewel lunges for her phone, but Carly’s curious gaze catches her sudden movement.

Scene 1
Jewel

I pull out my phone to record the tension between Macy and Carly.

Narrator

Jewel spins her phone around, the glittery screen casting a faint glow in the dim bathroom light. She angles the lens toward the mirror, catching Carly’s reflection and the blurred figure of Macy stepping into view.

"Hold that look,"

Jewel murmurs, her fingers trembling against the glass as the record icon blinks.

Macy now present
Carly

I freeze, my hand hovering near my lips with the gloss wand still out. I spin around, squinting at the screen.

"What are you doing? Is that a camera? If you think you are filming me for some sick joke, you are dead wrong. Put that away right now."

Narrator

The fluorescent lights buzz sharply, their electric hum slicing through the bathroom's stale air. Shadows stretch unevenly across the tiled walls. Macy stands frozen by the entrance, eyes narrowing as she shifts her weight. Silence thickens between them. Drew halts, an unlit cigarette hanging from her lip, her gaze fixed on the screen with a cautious, unreadable look.

Macy

I step into the center of the room, my heels clicking sharply against the tile. Swiftly, I snatch the phone from Jewel's grip before she can react.

"Enough games, Jewel. What exactly are you recording, and why is it happening in here?"

I demand, my eyes flashing with cold, calculated intensity.

Narrator

Macy’s fingers clamp tighter around the device, her knuckles paling against the cold metal. The bathroom sinks into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the frantic drip of a leaky faucet. Jewel stands frozen, her eyes flicking between Macy and the hidden camcorder. Beyond the vents, the distant, muffled roar of students shifting classes seeps in, heightening the room’s isolation.

Scene 2
Jewel

I force a laugh and show Carly a fake meme to distract her from the phone. She can't know my secrets yet. Instead, I try to ask what they are fighting about

Narrator

Jewel forces a light laugh, tapping her phone screen to bring up a ridiculous meme. She pushes the display toward Carly, hoping the absurd image will pull her attention away from the phone in Macy’s grip.

"Seriously, look at this. It is just a joke, okay?"

Her voice wavers with tension. She flicks her gaze between Macy and the others.

"What is even going on here? Why are you two actually fighting?"

Macy

I glance at the screen, then let out a sharp, mocking laugh, tossing the phone back onto the vanity counter with a clatter.

"Nice try, Jewel, but your pathetic memes won't save you. We are fighting because I do not tolerate snakes in my garden, and you are currently leaking venom."

Narrator

The phone skittered across the granite, coming to rest just inches from the basin. Suddenly, a sharp, rhythmic thumping echoed against the main bathroom door. A teacher’s muffled, frantic voice followed, demanding immediate entry. Drew straightened, her eyes flicking toward the camcorder wedged near the sinks. Her composure began to fray under the sudden external threat.

Ms. Albright now present
Drew

I shove the joint into my pocket, my heart pounding hard against my ribs.

"Shit,"

I mutter, lunging for the camcorder. I yank it free from the dispensers, stuff the device deep into my oversized hoodie, and bolt to the far stall to hide it behind the toilet tank.

Narrator

The bathroom door trembles under a heavy, impatient knock. Ms. Albright’s voice cuts through the tension, sharp and clipped.

"Open the door immediately."

Jewel stands frozen as the air chills, the scent of cleaning chemicals suddenly suffocating. The girls scramble, eyes wide with the frantic, jagged energy of trapped animals.

Scene 3
Jewel

"Mr Albright, what are you doing in the girl's bathroom?! This is a violation of our privacy, I demand you leave!"

I say, intimidating the teacher

Narrator

Jewel plants her feet firmly by the sinks, voice rising as she shouts,

"Mr Albright, what are you doing in the girl's bathroom?! This is a violation of our privacy, I demand you leave!"

Her voice cracks sharply, bouncing off the cold tiles. Without warning, the sprinkler system erupts with a violent hiss, drenching everyone in a cold, misty spray. The lights flicker once, then go out, plunging the room into chaotic, water-soaked darkness.

Ms. Albright

I gasp, shielding my face as the icy water drenches my blazer.

"Privacy? This is an emergency! Do not test my patience, young lady!"

I fumble blindly against the doorframe, my voice trembling with cold and frustration.

"Everyone, stay exactly where you are! The lights are out, but I am coming in!"

Narrator

Water pours from the ceiling, turning the floor into a slick, dangerous trap. Amid the downpour, the heavy door groans as a shoulder slams against it. Jewel stumbles backward, her boots slipping on the wet tiles as the lock clicks, metal grinding against metal in the dark.

Macy

I do not wait for Albright to barge in. Cloaked in darkness, I glide toward the side service exit, my movements exact despite the slick floor.

"Find your own way out,"

I whisper, never looking back as I slip through the heavy door into the hallway.

Narrator

Water cascades down the walls, blending with the dark, sticky residue from the soap dispensers. Amid the relentless flow, a sharp alarm shatters the air, its wail vibrating through the drenched floorboards. At the back, a heavy locker door creaks open, revealing a hidden compartment crammed with confiscated phones, all buzzing together with incoming notifications.

Scene 4
Jewel

I dive for the locker to grab my phone before Albright sees it. We exit with my phone intact, while Macy and Carly forget about me and continue fighting outside. Jake is watching them from the distance

Narrator

Jewel lunges for the locker, her fingers slipping on the wet metal as she scrambles to grab her phone from the buzzing pile. She slams the locker shut, the metal screeching sharply against the tile.

"Move!"

she yells at Drew. They burst through the doorway, sliding past Ms. Albright, who is still blinded by the downpour. Outside, the hallway is a chaotic blur of panic as students flood toward the exits. Jewel spots Jake frozen near the trophy case, his eyes fixed on the distant, shouting figures of Macy and Carly.

Jake now present
Jake

I catch Jewel's frantic gaze as she barrels past, her eyes wide with something I don’t like. My pulse spikes, cold sweat prickling my neck. I force a stiff, casual smile toward the crowd and start moving, needing to disappear into the chaos before anyone connects the dots.

Narrator

Jewel catches her breath, her fingers trembling against the hard casing of her phone. She barely registers Jake’s forced grin before a blaring fire alarm shatters the silence, flooding the hallway with strobing red emergency light. A security drone zips erratically overhead, its camera lens tracking every movement. Jewel spots Drew lingering by the lockers, her face pale.

Drew

I nudge Jewel hard with my shoulder, nodding toward the ceiling.

"Look up, dummy,"

I mutter, my voice barely audible over the screeching alarm. Keeping my head down, hood pulled tight, I shove her toward the stairwell.

"Stop staring at your screen and start running before that thing tags us."

Scene 5
Jewel

As we all sit outside the high school building, I see Maddy and Carly fighting. I want to start filming the girls arguing, but before I film anything significant, Jake comes to chat with me, unaware of my filming. It looks like he just wants to chat...

Narrator

Jewel sinks onto the damp concrete bench, phone angled low. The jagged silhouettes of Maddy and Carly flare in the distance, their voices sharp and angry near the parking lot. She raises her thumb to record, but a shadow eclipses her screen. Jake leans down, his face unusually guarded.

Jake

I lean back casually, blocking her screen with my shoulder and flash a lopsided grin.

"Hey, Jewel, you look like you have seen a ghost. Why are you hiding out here? You should get to the gym before the staff starts rounding up stragglers for the assembly."

Narrator

The humid air sticks to her skin, heavy with the scent of wet asphalt and faint smoke drifting in the distance. Jewel clutches her phone tightly, the case slick with moisture. Jake looms above her, his shadow cutting off the screen from view. He holds her gaze with a forced, casual intensity, waiting for her to respond to his words.
