Shrapnel and Heartbeats

Introduction
Narrator

Akashi sprinted down the dark corridor, boots pounding against broken tiles, rifle gripped tight. Red emergency lights flickered overhead as he barked orders into his headset, clearing the last room with swift efficiency. Behind him, gunfire echoed from the stairwell; two teammates dragged a wounded officer to cover. Akashi checked his magazine, then edged to a shattered window, eyes scanning the neon-lit street below. Sirens wailed, glass crunched underfoot, and he heard a faint cry from the far side of the rubble, someone was trapped. Without hesitation, he signaled for backup and vaulted over the debris, landing beside the injured civilian. The building trembled with distant explosions as Akashi assessed her injuries, his cold silver eyes meeting hers for the first time.

Scene 1
Akashi

Akashi soothes the girl and identifies himself.

Narrator

Akashi knelt amid the rubble, his tactical gear scraping against cracked concrete. His presence was steady, calm, a contrast to the chaos around them. His silver eyes softened as he focused solely on the woman.

"I am Captain Akashi. You are safe now, but we need to move quickly,"

he said, voice firm yet gentle. He reached out, steadying her shoulder.

Elara

I gasp as his hand touches my shoulder, my body flinching before I realize he is offering help.

"You are real,"

I whisper, my voice cracking. I look at the debris pinning my leg and reach out, my fingers trembling as I grab his tactical vest.

"Please, just get me out."

Narrator

The ceiling groaned, shedding a fine layer of pulverized concrete onto their shoulders. Dust swirled in the beam of Akashi's shoulder light, forming a tight, suffocating halo. Outside, the rhythmic thud of distant artillery rattled the floorboards, making the entire structure shudder violently. Akashi braced himself against the shifting debris, his gaze fixed on the heavy beam trapping the woman's leg.

Rian

I slide into position beside the Captain, bracing my shoulder against a support beam to bear the weight off the debris.

"I have the load, Akashi. Get her clear now. This ceiling is not going to hold much longer, so make it fast."

Narrator

Akashi locked eyes with Rian, his expression hardening into a mask of pure focus. He shifted his grip, sliding his hands beneath the woman's frame to prepare for the extraction. The floor groaned beneath them, a jagged crack snaking across the tiles as dust choked the dim air.
