Sunbeam on the Academy Gates

Current scene Campaign
Introduction
Narrator

Taiyō Usagui bounced on the balls of her feet, hands balled into eager fists as she peered up at the towering white walls of Seireitei. The morning air tingled with spiritual pressure, thick enough to make her buzz with anticipation. A stern-faced gatekeeper eyed her suspiciously, clipboard in hand.

"Name?"

he demanded. Taiyō flashed her sunniest grin, her orange eyes gleaming.

"Usagui Taiyō! Future captain!"

she declared, rocking back and forth. The guard snorted, glancing at her short stature and patched-up sleeves. The queue behind her shifted impatiently, recruits whispering about the tiny girl from District 73. Taiyō shifted her weight, humming a silly tune as she watched a butterfly hover near the stone, waiting for the gatekeeper's verdict. A gust of reiatsu from a nearby applicant ruffled her hair, but she grinned wider, refusing to let anyone see her nerves.

"You sure you’re ready for this, kid?"

the gatekeeper muttered. Taiyō straightened her back and tried to look taller.

"Watch me!"

she piped, voice ringing through the morning. The clipboard scratched, the gatekeeper grumbling as he opened the heavy side-door just enough for her to squeeze past. Taiyō darted inside, eyes shining as the vast streets of Seireitei unfolded before her.

I pause to admire the grand architecture, hoping to spot a famous captain.

Narrator

Taiyō stood still, her neck stretching to follow the polished stone spires piercing the sky. The vastness of Seireitei pressed down on her, so much grander than the crumbling ruins of District 73.

"Wow, it really is as shiny as they say,"

she whispered, eyes flicking between shinigami in white capes hurrying by. A stern clerk clutching a stack of parchment approached, brow furrowed at her aimless stance. He halted a few steps away, eyes fixed on her patched, mismatched sleeves.

I stop abruptly, fingers tapping a sharp, impatient rhythm against my stack of files. I glare at her disheveled attire, brow deepening.

"This is a restricted corridor, not a sightseeing tour. Where are your assignment papers? State your business immediately or vacate this sector at once."

Scene 2
Taiyō Usagui

I give him a silly look and say, 'I'm new here, I think I have to hand this in. I'm hoping to meet a captain, a really cool one, as I start my future here.'

Narrator

Taiyō tilted her head, a lopsided, carefree grin breaking the dull monotony of the grey stone corridor. She dug into her pocket and pulled out a crumpled, slightly damp slip of paper.

"I'm new here, I think I have to hand this in. I'm hoping to meet a captain, a really cool one, as I start my future here."

Renjiro’s eyes narrowed as he studied the paper, then flicked back to her rumpled robes, his expression hardening.

Renjiro

I snatch the damp, mangled scrap from her hand with two fingers, recoil in disgust, and drop it onto my stack.

"This is an embarrassment. You expect a captain to entertain a recruit who treats official orders like trash? Follow me, and try to walk with some semblance of dignity."

Narrator

Renjiro spun on his heel, the sharp clack of his wooden sandals echoing against the stone floor. He strode down a corridor lined with heavy iron-bound doors, his posture stiff and unyielding. Without glancing back to check if Taiyō followed, his fingers tapped a rapid, restless rhythm against the leather binding of his files.

I trot after him, asking if he knows which captain is the coolest one here.

Narrator

Taiyō trotted behind Renjiro, her oversized boots clicking steadily on the polished stone floor. She squinted up at the towering banners of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads that lined the hallway.

"Hey, mister clerk, since you work in here, do you know which captain is the coolest one?"

Suddenly, a massive, muscular figure wearing a Captain's haori rounded the corner. A heavy wave of spiritual pressure rolled out, forcing Taiyō to stumble back against the wall. The tall man stopped, his icy gaze locking onto the struggling recruit.

Kenpachi now present

I drop to one knee instantly, pressing my forehead to the cold stone.

"Captain, forgive this insolence. This recruit is unrefined and clearly unaware of proper decorum. I am currently escorting her to administrative processing to rectify her lack of discipline. Please, do not let her behavior reflect upon our standards."

Narrator

The hallway fell deathly silent, broken only by the frantic beating of Taiyō's heart. The captain towered above them, a mountain of raw, crushing intent that made the air itself seem to hum. Taiyō froze, eyes wide, staring at the man whose presence threatened to shatter her bravado.

Kenpachi

I step forward, the floor tiles cracking beneath my boots. I ignore the groveling clerk entirely, my gaze locked on the girl.

"You're still standing, brat. Most people would have fainted from just a taste of my spirit. Tell me, are you stupid, or do you have a spine?"

Scene 4
Taiyō Usagui

I stare at the captain, my heart racing with a mix of fear and intense excitement, and I begin to let my spiritual pressure flare outward. I shout, 'A CAPTAIN!! YOU LOOK SO COOL, SO MUSCULAR!!!'

Narrator

Taiyō paid no mind to the shrinking clerk. Her spiritual energy surged wildly, raw and unrefined, thickening the air with tension. She met the captain’s towering gaze, her grin wide and urgent.

"A CAPTAIN!! YOU LOOK SO COOL, SO MUSCULAR!!!"

Her overwhelming reiatsu pulsed outward, cracking the fragile stone beneath her feet. Suddenly, the corridor’s lanterns flared blood-red as a sharp, mechanical wail pierced the ceiling tiles, signaling a security lockdown.

Kenpachi

I release a sharp, jagged laugh that reverberates off the cracking walls. The wailing alarm is nothing but noise, yet it brings a delightful chaos to the air. I ignore the lockdown completely, stepping closer to the girl.

"Finally, someone with a pulse. Let's see if you can keep that grin once the real fighting starts."

Narrator

The wailing alarm grew deafening, its rhythmic screeching vibrating through the very bones of the structure. Beneath the relentless pressure, the polished floor fractured further, long, jagged lines spiderwebbing toward the base of the walls. Renjiro, still huddled on the ground, began to tremble uncontrollably as the ambient spiritual energy took on a suffocating, metallic quality. A heavy, sealed partition door suddenly began to descend at the far end of the hallway, threatening to trap them in the corridor with the captain.

Renjiro

I scramble frantically toward the descending partition, clutching my papers tightly against my chest.

"You fool! This is suicide! Leave that monster and get out before we are sealed in this tomb!"

My voice cracks, desperate and high, as I dive beneath the closing heavy metal gate.

Narrator

The heavy iron barrier slammed shut with a thunderous boom, sealing the chamber completely. Dust cascaded from the ceiling, filling the air with choking grit. Red emergency lights pulsed slowly, their glow syncing with the captain's heartbeat. Without warning, the floor panels beneath the captain disappeared, sending him plunging into a concealed containment sub-level. Taiyō was left alone as the corridor walls began to close in around her.

Scene 5
Taiyō Usagui

I look at the captain with a confused and silly expression. 'Captain, I’m still a rookie; I haven’t even joined a division yet. I won’t be able to put up a good fight for you. I have to join one to train, right?'

Narrator

Taiyō blinked, the overwhelming presence of the Captain fading as suddenly as it had appeared. The corridor’s walls creaked, metal groaning under the strain of the lockdown. She glanced upward at the ceiling, then down into the dark void where the floor had disappeared.

"Captain, I’m still a rookie; I haven’t even joined a division yet. I won’t be able to put up a good fight for you. I have to join one to train, right?"

Only silence answered her, broken by the steady, pulsing hum of a power core far below. Then the floor panels beneath her shifted sharply, tilting at a dangerous angle. A burst pipe hissed, releasing a stream of pressurized coolant that filled the chamber with a thick, freezing mist, obscuring the exit.
