A Girl’s Place at Bellwood

Current scene Director
Introduction
Narrator

Alexis fumbled with her phone, thumbs trembling as she scanned dozens of unread group chats marked with unfamiliar names, apparently her friends. Her new dorm room glowed with morning light, high ceilings and designer bedding making the place feel more like a hotel than a school. The scent of coffee drifted from the little kitchenette. Across the room, her roommate, a girl with sharp eyes and a perfectly ironed uniform, leaned against the window, tapping her own phone.

“You coming to breakfast, Lex?”

she called, glancing over. Alexis pulled the covers tighter, pulse racing. She caught sight of herself in the full-length mirror: long hair, flawless skin, a shape she’d only seen in movies. Her uniform lay neatly folded at the end of the bed. She had no idea how to put it on. The clock on her phone blinked: ten minutes until assembly. Her roommate’s gaze lingered, expectant. Somewhere in the hallway, laughter echoed. Doors slammed. Alexis took a shaky breath, feeling every second slip away.

Scene 1
Alexis

Thinking fast, I give my roommate an innocent look

Ugh I really don’t feel good today.. would you mind helping me get dressed? *My confident gaze towards my roommate somehow hides the complete and utter PANIC going through my mind

Narrator

Alexis forced a weak, practiced smile, letting her shoulders slump as if weighed down by a sudden illness. She gestured vaguely toward the pile of uniform pieces on her bed.

"Ugh, I really don’t feel good today. Would you mind helping me get dressed?"

Her eyes stayed locked on Valora, trying to project a fragile, rehearsed confidence.

Valora

I narrow my eyes, studying your flushed face before sighing in defeat. I cross the room with precise, efficient movements.

"Fine, but this is a one-time thing. We cannot be late for assembly again. Stand up and hold your arms out; let us fix this quickly."

Narrator

Valora moved with the brisk, clinical efficiency of a seasoned nurse. She reached for the stiff, pleated skirt, her fingers deftly navigating the fasteners. The room seemed to shrink as she loomed closer, her sharp gaze searching Alexis for any hint of deceit. Outside, the distant clanging of the assembly bell sliced through the silence, urgent and demanding.

Scene 2
Alexis

With a small smile I fight to hide* I appreciate this

As I think to myself, no way that worked, oh yeah let me pay attention to how this goes on

Narrator

Alexis offered a small, appreciative smile, hiding the shock simmering beneath. She stood perfectly still, eyes fixed on Valora’s hands as they tightened the skirt and smoothed the blouse. The fabric felt stiff and strange against her skin, a sharp reminder of her current situation as she carefully watched the garment’s every fold and fastener.

Valora

I yank the collar straight, my movements sharp and devoid of warmth.

"Stop fidgeting. If we miss the opening remarks, Dean Abernathy will have us both scrubbing the library floors. Grab your bag and move. I will not have my reputation tarnished by your sudden inability to dress yourself."

Narrator

Alexis grabbed her bag from the chair, the leather strap digging into her shoulder. Outside, the hallway buzzed with the hurried footsteps of students racing toward the main hall. She trailed Valora, who strode ahead with stiff impatience, her heels striking the linoleum in a sharp, mocking rhythm that deepened Alexis's hesitation.

Scene 3
Alexis

I try to match Valora's fast pace, hoping I don't trip in these new heels.

Narrator

Alexis concentrated on each step, the unfamiliar heels clicking sharply against the cold stone floor of the corridor. She kept pace with Valora’s brisk, purposeful stride, the designer bag heavy in her hand. The hallway pressed in around them, filled with students flowing like a river, their hushed, competitive chatter forming a wall of sound that made her head spin.

Valora

I glance back, my expression tightening as I watch your clumsy gait.

"Stop dragging your feet, Alexis. If you cannot walk in standard issue heels, leave them behind and go barefoot. We are losing precious seconds, and I refuse to be late because you are struggling with basic footwear."

Narrator

Alexis stumbled slightly as Valora’s sharp command sank in, the polished floor slick beneath her heels. She bit her lip, forcing her shoulders back to mirror Valora’s rigid posture while students swirled around them. A group of girls in matching blazers shot a quick, judging glance at their delay before vanishing around the corner.

Scene 4
Alexis

Realizing I need to focus, I try to recall some tips from my sister. I try to calm myself, I begin to walk and look as confident as I could while giving anyone who met my eyes a look that said they’re inferior to me, if I was put in a body of a girl who looks like she could own the school, I might as well play the part

Narrator

Alexis lifted her chin, her eyes narrowing with a cold, practiced dismissal as she took in the crowded hallway. She straightened her shoulders, radiating a sudden, icy authority that made nearby students look away. Turning to Valora, she offered a faint, imperious smirk.

"Do try to keep up, Valora. We have an image to maintain, after all."

Valora

I stop dead in my tracks, jaw tightening as I scan your face for any trace of the girl who couldn’t even fasten a skirt.

"Where did that come from, Alexis? You were stumbling like a toddler seconds ago. Explain this sudden change, or we are finished here."

Narrator

The hallway air thickened, the murmur of students fading into an uneasy silence. Alexis stood firm, her eyes locked on Valora. Valora froze, her gaze flickering over Alexis’s face as if hunting for a hidden script. Between them stretched a vast, uncrossable canyon.

Scene 5
Alexis

I keep my gaze icy, acting as if my earlier clumsiness was a calculated test.

Narrator

Alexis held her icy gaze, letting the silence stretch taut between them. She tilted her head slightly, a dismissive shrug brushing her shoulders as if to say her earlier stumbling had been nothing more than an act.

"Did you really think I would walk through this hall without testing the waters first, Valora? Do try to keep up."

Valora

I narrow my eyes, my breath hitching in a sharp, controlled intake.

"Testing the waters? You chose a dangerous game, Alexis. If that was truly a ruse, your commitment to deceit is alarming. Lead the way, then. Let us see if your performance holds up under the Dean’s scrutiny."

Narrator

The tension in the hallway thickened, heavy and nearly tangible. Valora’s sharp intake of breath echoed off the stone walls, her eyes locked on every subtle shift in Alexis’s stance. Nearby students slowed, sensing the sudden weight between the two roommates. Valora stepped back, poised and waiting for the next move.
