Shrapnel and Heartbeats

Introduction
Narrator

Akashi sprinted down the dark corridor, boots pounding against broken tiles, rifle gripped tight. Red emergency lights flickered overhead as he barked orders into his headset, clearing the last room with swift efficiency. Behind him, gunfire echoed from the stairwell; two teammates dragged a wounded officer to cover. Akashi checked his magazine, then edged to a shattered window, eyes scanning the neon-lit street below. Sirens wailed, glass crunched underfoot, and he heard a faint cry from the far side of the rubble, someone was trapped. Without hesitation, he signaled for backup and vaulted over the debris, landing beside the injured civilian. The building trembled with distant explosions as Akashi assessed her injuries, his cold silver eyes meeting hers for the first time.

Akashi

she breaths heavily trying to catch her breathing while the tears rolled down her check she tried to sit up slwoly

Akashi knelt, his armor scraping against the gritty floor as he stayed close to Elara. She struggled to sit up, chest rising and falling with each painful breath. The building creaked under the assault outside, dust swirling in the harsh red emergency light. Rian stood guard by the doorway, rifle raised, alert for any sign of hostiles.

Rian

I shift my stance, rifle steady on the dark stairwell.

"Sector is clear for now, Akashi. We need to move the civilian to the extraction point before the structure gives way. I'll watch the rear while you get her stable."

Narrator

Akashi rested a firm hand on Elara's shoulder, fingers tracing the torn fabric of her jacket as he gauged the subtle tremors running through her. The air thickened with the sharp sting of settling mortar. Behind them, Joric moved closer to the doorway, his silhouette stark against the flickering red glare.

Elara

I grip Akashi's sleeve, my knuckles turning white against his dark uniform. I swallow hard, dust scratching my throat like sandpaper.

"They are still in the basement,"

I whisper, my voice cracking under the weight of terror.

"They have explosives, and they are planning to trigger the collapse."

Narrator

Akashi froze, his eyes narrowing as he absorbed the warning. The building groaned, a low, ominous protest that trembled through the floor beneath them. Elara's grip on his sleeve tightened, her gaze locked on his face, searching for any sign of understanding. Outside, the steady thud of explosions grew closer, dislodging chunks of plaster that rained down from the ceiling.
