Ghost Data in Neon Shadows

Current scene Director
Introduction
Narrator

Zero slides through the midnight crowd of Shibuya Circuit, brushing past a vendor hawking black-market memory chips. Her neural dampeners buzz as she tunes out the riotous colors, eyes fixed on a nondescript man standing under an acid-green awning. He glances her way, fingers fiddling with a data wafer. She feels the subtle pulse in her skull, her own hardware pinging for a handshake she doesn’t remember accepting. Rain speckles her carbon-fiber jacket. Above, the glass towers split the night with fractal reflections. The job data is supposed to be clean. Instead, her target’s face flickers with déjà vu, each line triggering a sensation like vertigo. The man's lips barely part.

"You’re late, Zero. But I knew you’d come."

Scene 1
Zero

hey

Narrator

Zero edged forward, the neon from the awning casting sharp hues across her features. She met his gaze, fighting the dizzy pull in her mind.

"Hey,"

she said, voice calm despite the erratic thrum echoing in her neural dampeners. Kaito remained still, his fingers tracing the wafer’s edge without hesitation.

Kaito

I slide the wafer into the slot of a nearby terminal, forcing a flicker of static across the display.

"The contract is already bleeding into the network, Zero. If your integrity is as compromised as it seems, we need to finalize the transfer before your systems lock you out entirely."

Narrator

The terminal screen flickered with jagged violet light, casting fractured reflections on the rain-slick pavement. Zero’s eyes tracked the data packets streaming like digital blood. The air around the awning chilled, charged with the scent of ionized copper. Kaito slipped back into the shadows, his face unreadable as the terminal emitted a high-pitched whine.

Scene 2
Zero

I grab Kaito before he vanishes, demanding he explain our previous connection.

Narrator

Zero lunged forward, her fingers closing tightly around Kaito's coat sleeve just as he turned to vanish into the shadows. The fabric was rough beneath her palm, a harsh contrast to the slick, synthetic rain. She yanked him back, voice low and sharp.

"Wait. Tell me exactly who you are and what the hell happened between us before I lost my memory."

Kaito

I stumble but catch myself, locking eyes with your grip through a cold, hollow gaze.

"We were partners, Zero. We tried to scrub the archives at the Spire. You took the fall, and I took the memories. Now, let go, or we both lose what is left of our sanity."

Narrator

Zero’s grip tightened, knuckles whitening against his dark coat as the revelation hung between them like a jagged blade. Kaito remained rigid, eyes reflecting the flickering violet glare of the terminal. The market noise faded into a distant hum, leaving only the steady drip of acid rain against the metal awning.
