Fern Ridley

Human · Herbalist

Fern Ridley moves with quiet determination, her wiry frame wrapped in earth-toned linens and a weathered cloak. Keen hazel eyes miss little, and a streak of silver in her dark braid hints at wisdom beyond her years. She radiates gentle resolve and deference toward the living world.

Goal: To find the Heartbloom flower and return to her village with a cure for the blight.

How it begins

Fern pressed her palm to the cold, lichen-covered stone as she stepped over the old boundary marker, heart pounding so loudly she could hear it in her ears. Behind her, the fields blighted with blackened leaves seemed far away already. She knelt and checked her herb satchel, double-checking the sturdy twine and the vials clinking inside. Above, branches tangled in a ceiling of green, filtering sunlight into shifting patterns at her feet. A whisper, almost a sigh, drifted through the air as she stood; the forest had noticed her. She took one careful step forward, eyes scanning for hidden roots and faint trails, when a chorus of tiny, bell-like giggles erupted from a patch of ferns to her left. Fern tightened her grip on her walking stick, feeling the weight of every warning her grandmother ever gave her. The path before her twisted, half-swallowed by moss and shadow.

About this world

The Greendeep is a labyrinthine ancient forest where paths shift and moss-draped ruins hint at civilizations long forgotten. Nature spirits, both mischievous and dangerous, guard its secrets. The villagers at the forest's edge speak of the Greendeep with awe and dread, for it tests all who enter.

The Greendeep stretches for untold miles, its canopy so dense that sunlight falls in dapples and the air is thick with the scents of earth and growing things. Giant roots tangle across the forest floor, and stones carved with weathered glyphs mark old boundaries. In the heart of the forest, ruins from forgotten ages rise, entwined with vines. The forest shifts subtly, confounding maps and memory, and those who travel within must pay attention to the smallest signs: a cluster of glowing fungi, a murmured warning from the wind, the sudden hush of birdsong.

Nature spirits known as the Leshii dwell throughout the Greendeep. Some are helpful, others play tricks, and a few are openly hostile to outsiders. Villages surround the forest, relying on its fringes for rare herbs but never venturing beyond the ancient boundary stones. The social structure here is simple; elders and herbalists hold quiet authority, passing down stories of the Greendeep and its dangers. The current crisis, a creeping blight withering crops, has made the people desperate. They whisper that the only cure is the Heartbloom flower, which grows in the forest’s deepest, most haunted groves. Fern, the protagonist, must cross boundaries both physical and spiritual, contending not just with the wilderness, but with her own fears and the spirits' trials. Magic in the Greendeep is wild and natural, woven into the flora, the stones, and the very air; it reacts to intention and respect, rewarding humility and punishing arrogance.
