The basics

What is Youniverse Maker?

Youniverse Maker is an interactive entertainment platform where every world keeps its own memory of you. Pick a universe the community has built, step into a protagonist, and shape what happens scene by scene. If you've got a story in mind already, you can also build a world from scratch: your premise, your characters, your opening scene. Characters track what they personally saw and felt, the world reacts to your choices, and AI-generated scenes (text and images) bring each moment to life. Play in Director Mode for free-form storytelling, or Campaign Mode where the world pushes back. Every scene becomes a possible branch point for an alternate timeline.

What makes Youniverse Maker different from other AI roleplay tools?

Four things. Worlds that remember you: characters carry weeks of context, and the world picks up where you left off even hundreds of scenes in. Alternate timelines: branch from any scene to explore a different path, and keep both. Protagonist-led: the camera follows one character, not a sandbox. Two ways to play: Director Mode for free-form storytelling, Campaign Mode where the world pushes back. Other tools collapse memory, share context across characters, or treat you as a god view. We keep each character honest to themselves.

See how it stacks up against the tools people switch from on our comparison pages.

Does Youniverse Maker remember my story?

Yes. Every world keeps its own memory of you, and each character remembers what they personally saw and felt, not a blurred summary. Hundreds of scenes in, the world still knows who you are and what you have done, with no memory cards or notes to keep yourself. More on why most tools forget and what fixes it in why AI characters forget your story.

Is it an AI roleplay or companion app like Character.AI or Nomi?

It overlaps, but the shape is different. Companion apps center on one character you message. Youniverse Maker is a story you play through: you step into a protagonist, a whole world reacts around you, and characters pursue their own goals. The characters still remember you, but you are playing a story, not keeping a chat. See how it compares to Character.AI and Nomi.

Who is this for?

Anyone who's imagined a story in their head and wished they could play it out. Casual entertainment-seekers, gamers who want paths their games never offered, tabletop fans who want a solo experience without rules, roleplay enthusiasts who want continuity, and curious newcomers who just want to see what happens when they step into a world. No writing or game experience needed.

Do I need to be a writer?

No. You type what your character does in plain language, and the world handles narration, descriptions, and scene-setting. There's nothing to compose; your contribution is your choices.

Is the content AI-generated or human-written?

AI generates each scene. We design how the world behaves: what persists in memory, how characters react, when the world pushes back. You shape what happens through your choices. The storytelling rules are ours; the moment-by-moment text is AI-generated.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Works on any modern phone, tablet, or laptop. No app to install.

Playing

How do I start a universe?

Two paths. Browse the Explore library for universes the community has built, then step into the protagonist from scene 1 or branch from any scene to start an alternate timeline. Create your own from scratch via New Universe: a 3-step wizard walks you through world, character, and review (hit Surprise me for an instant starter if you don't have an idea). Two minutes either way and you're playing.

What is a scene?

A scene is one moment in the story: what's happening, who's there, what they do or say. You type what your character does, the world responds, and that's one scene. Each scene takes about a minute to generate, and most players spend a few minutes per scene reading and deciding.

What's the difference between Director Mode and Campaign Mode?

Director Mode lets you direct the world around your protagonist: introduce events, guide other characters, shape what happens. Campaign Mode keeps you in your protagonist's shoes only, and the world pushes back, shapes the action, and surprises you. Director is on every plan; Campaign is on Plus and Pro.

Can I use it as an AI dungeon master for solo RPG?

Yes. In Campaign Mode the world runs the way a dungeon master would: characters make their own moves, the world changes on its own, and it pushes back with real stakes, all without dice, character sheets, or rules to manage. In Director Mode you take the dungeon master's seat yourself. More in AI as your dungeon master.

What's the difference between creating a universe and branching?

Creating starts a new universe from scratch: pick a world, build your character. Branching picks a moment in an existing public universe and explores a different path from there. Daily creation caps apply to creations only; branching is unlimited on every plan, including Free.

Can I retry or edit a scene?

Yes, on the latest scene. A retry button regenerates the scene; a pencil icon next to any narrator or NPC line lets you rewrite it. Once you start a new scene, the previous one locks in.

How long does a universe usually last?

Most playthroughs run for dozens of scenes across multiple sessions. A first session is usually 30 minutes to 2 hours. There's no fixed endpoint; you can wrap a universe when it feels right or keep going indefinitely. Everything saves automatically.

Safety and privacy

Are my universes private?

Privacy works the same on every plan. You can set any universe to public or private from your library. Public universes can be read by anyone with the link and appear in Explore. If another player has branched a public universe of yours, it stays accessible to them.

How is my data used?

Your inputs are sent to AI services to generate scenes and images. We store your universes and account information so you can access them anytime. We do not sell your personal data. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

How do I report inappropriate content?

While reading any public universe, click the flag icon on any scene. Our team reviews every report. You can also reach us through Contact Support.

Help and troubleshooting

The AI is taking a long time. What should I do?

Creating a new universe takes about a minute while the world, characters, and opening scene come together. Subsequent scenes generate in around a minute too. Wait for the loading to finish rather than refreshing. Mid-submission refresh can create a duplicate scene. If you see an error, your progress is saved and you can safely reload. If something unexpected keeps blocking you, contact support and we aim to unblock you within a day.

My scene images aren't loading

Scene images are AI-generated and stored in the cloud. If an image isn't appearing, try refreshing the page. Occasionally an image fails to generate on a particular scene; the universe continues normally and a new image appears in a later scene.
