Getting Started
Step into a universe and start playing in under three minutes.
Two ways into Youniverse Maker: step into a universe someone else built, or build one of your own. Both get you playing the same way. No account needed.
Step into a universe
The fast way in. About 30 seconds to pick something, another minute to start playing.
Find a universe
Open Explore. Filter by genre, mood, or what's trending. Each universe is a different world someone built and shared with the community: cover image, genre tags, view and play counts so you can tell what's catching on.
See it before you commit
Click any universe to land on its preview. The world overview, your protagonist, the timelines other players have built from it, and a gallery of scenes from their plays. Nothing is locked in yet.
Step into your own version
Tap Play it now and you drop into a fresh branch of the world. Same opening scene, same protagonist, but your choices from here. The original timeline stays intact. Other players can branch the same universe in different ways without affecting yours.
Make choices that matter
Type what your character does. The world responds, NPCs react, scenes evolve. What you played sticks. Pick Director Mode or Campaign Mode to set how the world reacts back.
Build your own
A few minutes to sketch the world and cast, another minute for the world to assemble, then you're playing.
Pick a genre and sketch a world
Pick from 25 genres. Add a few lines about where the world takes place, who lives there, and what's at stake. Or hit Surprise me at the top of the wizard and let us suggest a complete starter you can edit.
Set up your protagonist (and optional supporting cast)
Give your protagonist a name, species, role, and backstory. Bring up to four NPCs alongside them if you want a richer opening cast. Each character can have optional advanced fields: appearance, personality, memories, knowledge, inventory, abilities, and named relationships with other characters in the cast.
Review and submit
See everything you've set up. Tweak anything. Submit when ready. The world assembles in about a minute, with a progress bar showing you what's happening and tips about how the game works along the way.
Play what you built
Drop into your universe at scene one. The opening is generated from what you sketched. From here, play is the same as any other universe: you in your protagonist's shoes, choices shaping what happens next.
Two ways to play
Same underlying world, different feel. Pick a mode when you start playing a universe.
Director Mode
You play your protagonist, and you can also direct the world around them: NPCs, events, plot, twists. Type "A storm breaks out" or "The bartender reveals his real name" and it happens. If you like driving the narrative, Director Mode fits.
Campaign Mode
You stay in your protagonist's shoes. Their actions, their words, their choices. The narrator runs the rest: NPCs decide their own moves, the weather changes on its own, and the world pushes back when you try to step outside what your character could plausibly do. "I draw my sword and face the bandit" works; "The bartender reveals his real name" gets handled by the narrator. If you want the world to surprise you, Campaign Mode fits.
