Portrait of Vaelsorm

Vaelsorm

Wyvern · Dominator

Vaelsorm commands attention with a massive, sinuous frame of blackened steel and bone, scales etched with archaic circuitry. His eyes blaze with predatory intelligence, and each calculated movement radiates cold authority. Smoke leaks from his fanged jaws, promising both ancient cunning and world-ending ferocity.

Goal: To assert dominance over the scavengers and begin his campaign of destruction and submission.

How it begins

Vaelsorm crushed twisted metal beneath his talons as he emerged from the gutted torso of a dead colossus. Heat shimmered off the buckled hull, painting the wasteland in wavering lines. A chorus of alarm klaxons shrieked from battered outposts along the horizon. Vaelsorm flexed his iron wings, sensors embedded in ancient scales feeding him data, weaknesses, movement, the scent of fear. Lightning clawed at the roiling sky above.

A convoy of scavengers, their vehicles bristling with makeshift weaponry, skidded to a halt near the wreck’s shadow. Their leader barked orders, waving a ragged banner as the gun mounts started to track Vaelsorm’s movements. The energy in the air thickened; a low, guttural challenge rumbled in Vaelsorm’s core. He lowered his head, smoke curling from his jaws, eyes locking onto prey. The world offered itself for burning.

About this world

A fractured world scarred by ancient wars, where technology and sorcery intertwine amid ruins and lawless frontiers. Floating debris fields orbit scorched continents, ruled by shifting coalitions and restless machines. Amid chaos, new powers rise to seize control from the ashes.

The Shattered Terran Expanse is a world torn asunder by the convergence of forbidden science and catastrophic sorcery. Centuries ago, a cataclysmic event split the planet's crust, leaving fractured continents adrift beneath skies choked with dark clouds and swirling electromagnetic storms. The land is littered with colossal derelicts, remnants of titanic constructs and war machines, some still humming with residual energy or crawling with scavenger drones. Jagged mountains punch through scorched plains, and rivers of molten metal cut new paths through the rubble.

Society is fragmented. Isolated enclaves of survivors cluster in fortified citadels, governed by technocratic councils, warlords, or cults that worship relics from a lost age. Autonomous machines roam the wilderness, some hostile, some indifferent, others haunted by echoes of old programming. Small pockets of resistance and rebellion spring up around resource-rich ruins, fighting to seize or defend caches of ancient power.

Technology is prized and feared in equal measure; arcane engines and cybernetic augments blend with jury-rigged weaponry and ancient rituals. Magic, once the domain of mythical beings and vanished gods, flickers unpredictably, its use carries risk, sometimes warping reality or drawing hungry anomalies. Day-to-day life is a struggle for survival, colored by constant threat from both rival factions and the world’s unstable energies. Legends tell of beings assembled from the dead remnants of constructs and infused with divine consciousness; most dismiss them as myths, but the world’s scars suggest otherwise.
