Protagonist

Portrait of Linh Nguyen

Linh Nguyen

goblin · lighthouse keeper's grandchild

Small and wiry, Linh carries an intensity that belies her goblin frame. Her copper-green skin is smudged with soot, and her sharp eyes flicker with restless intelligence. She dresses in patched, oil-stained overalls, a battered star-seed talisman swaying at her side, radiating a quiet, stubborn resolve.

Goal: To sabotage the Astral Convergence ceremony by leaking the lighthouse's starlight into the Chasm.

How it begins

Linh Nguyen jammed her boot against the corroded lantern housing, hands shaking as she worked the old copper lever. The whine of starlight caged inside the glass orb rattled the Ouro-Spire’s bones. Cold mist beaded on Linh’s brow while the star-seed at her belt pulsed, whispering syllables no one should know. She glanced at the sea of swirling blue fog below, where the anchor-chains vanished into nothing. Tonight’s ceremony loomed, but Linh’s heart hammered for a different reason.

Footsteps echoed on the spiral stairs behind her.

“Grandchild, what are you doing?”

called the voice of Keeper Thao, sharper than the salt wind. The glow of her lantern sent shadows darting along the damp walls. Linh kept her back to her, fingers poised over the release valve. The starlight thrummed, eager for escape.

About this world

Kalthos is a realm of drifting obsidian islands suspended by titanic chains above a churning blue abyss. Perpetual mists cloak the landscape, and starlight is both weapon and lifeblood, guarded by mystical Glimmer-Binders. The lurking Leviathan clouds threaten disaster should the starlight falter.

Kalthos is a collection of fractured obsidian islands, each jagged and black as pitch, floating high above the endless Azure Chasm. Gargantuan, rust-riven chains descend from every island’s edge, their ancient links vanishing into the blue haze below, anchoring the land to an unseen seabed. The Chasm itself is a ceaseless mystery: a swirling, abyssal sea where great Leviathans slumber, their forms sometimes glimpsed as cloudy silhouettes beneath the mists. The air is always damp, suffused with the scent of ozone and salt, and the light is filtered through perpetual weeping mists, giving every surface a slick, spectral sheen.

Society is organized around the maintenance of these islands. At its heart are the Glimmer-Binders, keepers of the lighthouses, who safeguard the realm by housing sentient starlight within enchanted lanterns. This starlight not only keeps the islands illuminated, but also sings out frequencies that keep the Leviathans at bay. The Binders form a secretive order, guided by celestial rituals and strict codes, their influence respected and feared. Ordinary folk cluster in rain-soaked settlements near the chains, eking out a living by fishing the upper mists or mining obsidian for trade. Festivals revolve around the movement of stars and moon, and the Astral Convergence is the most sacred event, when the boundaries between sky, sea, and myth dissolve.

Magic in Kalthos is not cast but coaxed, songs, frequencies, and lantern-craft channel the will of sentient stars trapped in crystal orbs. These energies are volatile, and forbidden knowledge surrounds the true cost of disturbing the Chasm’s balance. History here is marked by disasters when Leviathans have awoken, dragging entire islands down. Now, with the eldest lighthouse keeper vanished and rumors swirling of unrest, the world teeters on the edge of mythic upheaval.
