Portrait of Morgan Haas

Morgan Haas

Human · Cutlass-affiliated burglar

Morgan Haas blends into a crowd, average build, nondescript face, always dressed for utility over style. His calm, steady presence masks a mind honed for infiltration and survival. He cracks jokes in tense moments, but beneath the surface, loss and determination drive every move.

Goal: To successfully infiltrate the server room and retrieve the necessary data within the tight timeframe.

How it begins

Morgan Haas jams a lockpick into the server room’s door, sweat prickling on his neck as the security camera above swings away, just as planned. The hum of distant machinery vibrates through his shoes. Behind him, the distant click of elevator doors makes him freeze, heart thudding. He slides the flash drive from his pocket, glancing at his watch. Ninety seconds before the backup guard’s next patrol. The corridor smells like ozone and cheap air freshener. A muffled footstep echoes closer. Morgan curses under his breath and works faster, twisting the pick. The lock releases with a soft snap. He’s in. The room is cold, filled with blinking lights and tangled cables. Hard drive trays blink. He hears a voice, female, sharp, closer than before, just down the hall:

“Did you hear that? Someone’s here.”

About this world

A version of modern Earth where two ancient, powerful secret societies, Scalene and Livery, wage a clandestine war, shaping governments and industries from the shadows. The mercenary agency Cutlass operates in the grey space between, taking contracts from both sides. Civilians remain largely oblivious, though collateral damage is on the rise.

Shadow Earth looks like the world you know: skyscrapers gleam, traffic snarls, technology pulses through daily life. Beneath this mundane surface, an invisible war simmers between Scalene and Livery, whose centuries-old rivalry has evolved into corporate espionage, sanctioned hits, and subtle sabotage across global cities. Scalene, obsessed with cold logic and order, infiltrates governments and multinational corporations, manipulating policy from boardrooms and backchannels. Livery, with roots in aristocracy and ritual, prefers social engineering, influence in media, and psychological warfare. Both societies have deep pockets, global reach, and little patience for those who stand in the way.

The mercenary agency Cutlass, neither loyal nor innocent, takes jobs from both factions, if the price is right. Contractors like Morgan Haas navigate a labyrinth of shifting alliances, betrayals, and constant surveillance. Advanced but plausible tech (secure comms, biometric spoofers, stealth drones) gives agents an edge, but brute force and quick thinking often matter most. Most civilians are unaware, though recent attacks and leaks have put the world on edge. The old codes of secrecy are fraying; even the most powerful are not safe.

Daily life in Shadow Earth is tense for those in the know. Paranoia reigns, trust is currency, and every stranger could be a spy or assassin. Yet, on the surface, the world spins on: markets open, subways run, and people cling to normalcy, oblivious to the war waged just out of sight.
