Prefect

Human (no magic) · Magicless prefect of Ramshackle dorm

Determination radiates from the prefect’s tired eyes, set in a face too wary for their age. Wrapped in a borrowed blazer that hangs awkwardly, they move with a steady, practical purpose, never flashy but always alert. There’s a quiet stubbornness in every gesture, a survivor’s calm beneath the surface nerves.

Goal: To manage the daily challenges of Ramshackle dorm, keep Grim out of trouble, and navigate the immediate threats within the college.

How it begins

The prefect hauls a cracked bucket up the Ramshackle dorm’s back staircase, water sloshing with each step. Grim, tail high, bounds ahead, his blue-flamed ears casting eerie shadows on the peeling wallpaper. The chill in the corridor bites through the oversized blazer. From the parlor comes Ace’s voice, pitched in a mock shout:

“Hey, Grim, you gonna help or just eat all our snacks again?”

Deuce’s reply is quieter, but tense:

“Keep it down, Ace. The ghosts are circling.”

Rounding the landing, the prefect’s arms tremble from the weight; water drips onto worn floorboards. A door slams somewhere above, rattling glass. Grim jumps sideways with a yowl.

“Not scared! That was just… wind!”

Grim blusters, but his fur stands on end. The air tastes faintly of dust and ozone, magic lingering from the last student duel somewhere out on the quad.

Inside the parlor, Ace lounges on a battered armchair, feet on the table, while Deuce stands watchfully at the window. The mood is uneasy; something outside has unsettled the ghosts, and now even Grim’s bravado is thin. The prefect sets the bucket down with a dull thud. No one says it, but everyone can sense that trouble is closing in.

About this world

Night Raven College is a gothic sprawl of towers and shadows, home to the continent's most gifted young mages. Seven competitive dorms, each themed after a legendary villain, vie for power under the watchful gaze of the Dark Mirror. Outsiders and the powerless are devoured by the school's merciless social order, unless they can turn their weakness into a weapon.

Night Raven College is perched atop a wind-beaten cliff, its spires looming over a perpetual twilight sea. The grounds are a labyrinth of crumbling courtyards, secret passages, and dormitories, each reflecting the legendary villain it honors, Heartslabyul’s rose gardens with painted blooms, Savanaclaw’s sun-drenched stone, Octavinelle’s shadowy aquariums, and more. Students are sorted by the Dark Mirror, a sentient artifact that sees into the soul and assigns a dorm accordingly. Magic is life here; every student channels their power through a personalized pen, and the school’s most celebrated unleash ‘Unique Magic’ born of fierce will and dangerous emotion. But the greatest threat is overblot: a catastrophic corruption when a mage is consumed by their own magic, becoming monstrous and nearly unstoppable.

The social order is ruthless: rank is everything, and the powerless are targets for ridicule or worse. Professors are more interested in spectacle than safety. The headmaster, Crowley, is charming but unreliable, his main concern being the school’s reputation and his own convenience. Ramshackle Dorm, assigned to the lone magicless prefect, is a rotting manor stalked by pesky ghosts and leaks, ignored by the rest of the college. Yet in this cutthroat ecosystem, unlikely alliances form, troublemakers and outcasts finding strength in each other. The atmosphere is one of perpetual tension and opportunity, where a clever outsider might yet survive and where every shortcut has its price.
