Ser Mairead Blackthorn

Human · Young Knight and New Jousting Competitor

Mairead is striking for her wary defiance, her storm-grey eyes alert beneath a battered helm. Wiry from years of secret training, she moves with the restless energy of someone who has waited too long for her chance. Her armor is patched but cared for, sharp with pride and longing.

Goal: To win the Moonfall Joust, earn her own land, and gather the loyalty of powerful women.

How it begins

Mairead tightens her grip on the lance, leather creaking beneath her gauntlet as her charger stamps in the half-light. Dust rises from the packed earth, thickening the scent of sweat and horse, and the roar of the crowd behind the barricades presses close. Across the tilt, Lady Elayne Ravenshade waits astride a midnight-black destrier, her pale gaze unreadable beneath the silver-and-indigo helm. Sister Isaura moves quickly among the waiting jousters, pressing a steady hand against Mairead’s knee, her touch brief, but warm.

“Ride hard. Trust no one.”

Isaura’s voice is low, almost lost in the noise. The flag goes up. Mairead lowers her visor, heart hammering, and the world narrows to the long track, the target at the end, and the knowledge that everything she is hangs on this first pass.

About this world

Virelle is a brooding, windswept realm where noblewomen vie for power beneath the cold shadow of Caelith Keep. Once alive with wild magic, now its embers smolder in secrecy as steel and intrigue rule. Each year, the Moonfall Joust brings fierce ambition, forbidden desire, and shifting alliances to the fore.

Virelle sprawls across mist-choked valleys and harsh, rolling moors, pierced by the high black walls of Caelith Keep. The land's forests are dense and ancient, haunted by lingering tales of witchcraft and ghosts. Though rivers once glittered with magic, now only a few dare admit to arcane gifts, witches and mages are hunted, their powers a death sentence if revealed. The kingdom is ruled by a matriarchal court, its noble houses led by formidable women whose fortunes rise and fall on the field of lance and the cool marble of the council chamber. Wealth is drawn from salt mines, wool, and the taxes of lesser houses. The annual Moonfall Joust, hosted in Caelith’s shadow, is both tournament and battlefield: noblewomen compete for land, prestige, and sometimes the queen’s favor, drawing would-be champions and schemers alike. Public displays of passion among women are both celebrated and weaponized, even as true attachments carry peril. Daily life is defined by rank, the threat of exposure for those with secrets, and the careful forging of alliances. Beneath all, a handful of scattered magic-users linger, hidden, hunted, and yearning for a world that has all but forgotten their kind.
