Protagonist
Souta Fujimura
Souta Fujimura’s steady presence belies his age: a slim, sharp-eyed boy with unkempt black hair and a wary posture. He wears a rain-soaked school uniform, his tense hands betraying the storm behind his calm demeanor. Driven by fierce loyalty and a gnawing sense of urgency, Souta radiates quiet determination.
Goal: To stop Kyubey from making a contract with Aoi and Haruka.
How it begins
Souta sprints across the rain-slick pavement, clutching his phone in one hand, ignoring the chill that seeps through his uniform. The fluorescent lights of the convenience store ahead throw harsh shadows across Aoi, who stands just outside with Haruka and the small, catlike shape of Kyubey perched on the curb. Souta's breath catches as he hears Kyubey’s voice, soft, inhuman, proposing its contract in the open.
Aoi’s hands tremble as she glances from Kyubey to Haruka, her face pale in the flickering light. Haruka’s jaw is set, eyes narrowed with resolve, but Souta notices the slightest quiver in her injured arm. The city’s noise seems to fade as Souta rushes forward.
“Aoi, don’t listen to it!”
he shouts, stepping between his friends and Kyubey. The rain intensifies, beading on his hair and shoulders. Kyubey turns its blank gaze up, unblinking.
"Why do you interfere, Souta?"
it asks, voice flat. Souta feels every eye on him, the future twisting in the silence.
About this world
Mitakihara City is a vibrant, modern metropolis cloaked in the ordinary. Underneath its glowing signs and bustling streets, unseen forces clash: magical girls and the Witches they hunt. The enigmatic Kyubey quietly perpetuates a tragic cycle, offering miracles at devastating cost, as ordinary citizens remain unaware of the darkness in their midst.
Mitakihara City blends sleek, high-rise towers with peaceful neighborhoods, its skyline illuminated by neon signs and the soft hum of electric trains threading through the night. At first glance, it is a typical Japanese city, students hurry to school, markets bustle with evening shoppers, and parks fill with laughter. But beneath the surface, labyrinthine otherworlds lurk: hidden realms where Witches spawn labyrinths invisible to most, draining the hope from unassuming passersby. Magical girls, teenage girls granted power by the alien contractor Kyubey, are tasked with fighting these Witches, risking their lives for a wish granted at the moment of contract. The city's true battle occurs in these shadowy spaces, where miraculous power is paid for in suffering and loss.
Socially, Mitakihara is tightly knit; rumors and secrets spread quickly among students. Few know the burden carried by magical girls, whose existence is denied by the adults and masked by fate itself. The Incubators, of which Kyubey is one, operate with perfect efficiency and no empathy, viewing human emotion as a tool to harness energy. The ongoing conflict between hope and despair shapes the city’s true heartbeat, as those who learn the truth must choose between ignorance and sacrifice. Cultural norms emphasize perseverance and harmony, but for some, like Souta and his friends, these values are tested by the temptation of miracles and the price they exact.
