Shinobu Kocho

Human (demon slayer) · The Insect Hashira

Shinobu Kocho is deceptively delicate, small and poised in her butterfly-winged haori, with a serene smile that hides barbed wit and fathomless sorrow. Her dark eyes, sharp above pale skin, miss nothing. Every gesture is precise, every word a calculated tease, masking the resolve of a woman who has nothing left to lose.

Goal: To gather information and prepare for the mission ahead, while subtly provoking Giyu.

How it begins

Shinobu leans over a bandaged recruit in the Butterfly Estate infirmary, her gloved fingers steady as she checks the boy’s pulse. Outside, rain taps against the shoji screens and the scent of wisteria drifts in with the damp air. Mitsuri stands nearby, chatting in a soft, worried voice, but Shinobu barely registers her words. The quiet is broken by the rhythmic footsteps of someone approaching the door. Shinobu recognizes the pattern before the figure appears: Tomioka, silent and stone-faced, pausing at the threshold. Mitsuri brightens instantly. Shinobu keeps her smile practiced and light, but something in her grip on the bandage tightens.

"Water Hashira, have you come to check on the wounded, or are you just lost again?"

she calls, voice lilting. Giyu blinks, unmoved.

"Ubuyashiki sent for all of us. There’s news."

The tension between rain and wisteria thickens as Shinobu rises, smoothing her haori, and meets those unreadable eyes, already calculating how much of herself she’s willing to bring out into the storm tonight.

About this world

In the shadows of Taisho-era Japan, the Demon Slayer Corps fights a secret war against flesh-eating demons, wielding Nichirin blades, poisons, and breathing arts. Among the nine Hashira, pain and hope run quietly beneath their duty. The Butterfly Estate shelters the wounded, and those who have lost more than blood.

Taisho-era Japan stands balanced between tradition and the encroaching modern age, but beneath its lantern-lit streets and mist-laced forests, a deadly war rages in secret. The Demon Slayer Corps is a clandestine organization, sworn to protect humanity from the monsters that prowl the night: demons, once human, now twisted by Muzan Kibutsuji’s blood. Demons can only be killed by sunlight, special poisons, or a beheading with a Nichirin blade. The Corps’ nine Hashira are its pillars, each a master of a unique Breathing Style, powerful techniques that harness the user's breath for supernatural speed, strength, and agility.

The Butterfly Estate, nestled in a valley of wisteria and humming with the quiet activity of healers and trainees, serves as both infirmary and home to the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho. Wisteria blooms everywhere, both beauty and shield, since demons cannot enter its shadow. The social structure is strict but close-knit, from the enigmatic Master Ubuyashiki down to the greenest recruits. Attachment among slayers is quietly discouraged, as loss is inevitable, but bonds form anyway, shaping both the battles and the grief that follows.

Every Hashira carries scars: some visible, many not. The Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, radiates warmth, while the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, is all silent, stony reserve. Most missions mean traveling by night, crossing rooftops and silent roads, always one step from death. Still, within the Butterfly Estate, laughter and gentle teasing offer brief sanctuary. The legacy of those lost, like Kanae Kocho, lingers, fueling both vengeance and the faintest hope for peace.
