About this universe
Dragged from monastic exile, Yoshikiyo is forced into the demon-blighted ruins his father cursed. Marked by blood and mistrusted by all, he must ally with an arrogant inquisitor and a cursed, dying warrior. Demons and old wounds haunt every step as Sadamune’s vengeful spirit awakens with hellish power. Redemption, betrayal, or damnation await at the Waste’s heart.
Tone
Ominous and unflinching, with every alliance tense and every silence heavy. Violence is raw, the supernatural is visceral, and the ancient world feels frayed and forsaken.
Themes
legacy and guilt, corruption vs. redemption, power and sacrifice, trust amidst betrayal
Protagonist
Minamoto No Yoshikiyo
Yoshikiyo is a haunted youth with a sharp, aristocratic face, unmistakably his father’s son. His faded monk’s robes and rough-trimmed buzzcut signal a life erased, but his slate-gray eyes burn with stoic exhaustion and deep, bottled anger. He moves with silent grace, every gesture showing tension and long-repressed violence.
Goal: To proceed into the ruined keep and confront the source of the corruption, as commanded.
How it begins
Yoshikiyo stands barefoot in chilled mud, wrists cinched in rough hemp, the carved prayer beads biting into his skin. The warding talismans tied to his arms pulse with static hum, reacting to the ruined land’s poison. Abe no Masahiro, elegant robes untouched by the filth, circles him, reading incantations off an immaculate scroll. The words crawl under Yoshikiyo’s skin, dredging up the memory of a blade pressed to his scalp and the stink of burnt hair. Soldiers form a wary circle; none meet his eyes. Taira no Kagehira looms at the edge, his bulk wrapped in blackened armor, hell-scorched arm hidden under iron-bound canvas. The wind shifts, blowing the stench of ash and old blood from the Waste. Masahiro’s voice rises, cold and precise.
"You will proceed directly to the ruined keep. Any deviation, and I will burn your soul clean."
Kagehira’s hand tightens on his sword; the ropes at his wrist creak. The ground vibrates with a low, subterranean howl as the mists part, revealing the shattered road to Sadamune’s fortress. Yoshikiyo swallows, lifts his chin, and steps forward, every motion watched by enemies, uneasy allies, and the vengeful dead.
About this world
A decade after Minamoto no Sadamune tore open the gate to the underworld, ancient Japan languishes in fear, cursed blight, and political upheaval. Demonic corruption seeps from the ruined fortress, poisoning land and soul alike. The imperial court, paralyzed by terror, exiles expendable outcasts and secret sorcerers to wage a desperate, covert war against the vengeful spirit's spreading dominion.
This world is ancient Japan as ravaged by one heretical act: the opening of a literal demon gate by Minamoto no Sadamune. The Ashen Waste, once prosperous frontier lands, is now a petrified crater, ringed by abandoned villages and haunted by blighted forests. The soil is gray and cracked, life stunted or twisted by the underworld’s touch. Rivers run black beneath choking morning fogs. The ruined remains of Sadamune’s wooden fortress fester at the epicenter, pulsing with spectral activity and shifting geography. Imperial authority hangs on by a thread; the capital has been hastily relocated and ringed with wards, but superstitious terror rules more than law does. Political purges, secret exiles, and compulsory tonsure are tools for containing spiritual backlash as much as human dissent. Out on the Waste’s perimeter, a militarized encampment forms the last barrier between blight and the fragile
“normalcy”
of the new capital. Soldiers and spiritual agents, like the immaculate Kebiishi official Abe no Masahiro, walk side by side with grizzled, cursed veterans like Taira no Kagehira. Beneath the surface swirl rivalries between old samurai houses, ambitious bureaucrats, and the shadowy Onmyōdō sorcerers who maintain the thinning veil between worlds. Common people cling to superstitious rituals, leaving offerings at crumbling shrines and whispering rumors of monstrous apparitions. The air is thick with dread and the scent of decay. At the Waste’s heart, the tortured spirit of Sadamune rules as a new demon king, twisting both the land and the minds of those who dare approach. All roads lead back to the ancient crime and those bound by blood, vengeance, and a war the living cannot win alone.
