Protagonist

Portrait of Tadeo Ortega

Tadeo Ortega

star-seed · black-market courier

Tadeo Ortega carries himself with a calculated discretion, his slender frame wrapped in muted, ill-fitting finery that fails to catch the light. His eyes, sharp and restless, miss little under unruly dark hair. Tadeo’s quiet tension suggests a life spent slipping through spaces he was never meant to enter.

Goal: To infiltrate the ballroom and retrieve the Duke's stolen correspondence from a rival courier before the end of the final dance.

How it begins

Tadeo Ortega grips the edge of a servant’s cloak and ducks behind a column as a parade of noble guests sweeps through the grand foyer of the Solar Palace. The air glows with layered hues, azure, gold, and rose, cast by the bioluminescent nobility passing mere steps away. Tadeo’s own dim, silvery sheen barely registers in the marble’s reflection as he inches closer to the ballroom doors, pulse thrumming. A steward pauses, eyeing him with suspicion. Tadeo lowers his gaze, fists tightening beneath the borrowed cloak. From the ballroom, music rises, each note a countdown. Across the room, he glimpses the rival courier, Cassarian Vale, speaking animatedly with a masked duchess. Tadeo edges toward the nearest alcove, heart pounding, calculating his next move as laughter and shifting lights threaten to expose him at any moment.

About this world

Vespera is an opulent disc-world floating amid swirling nebulae, where status hinges on the radiance of one's bioluminescence. Oakhaven, the capital, buzzes with intrigue as nobles and outcasts navigate a web of secret alliances and betrayals. The Solar Regency enforces strict codes, and every ball is a battleground for power.

Vespera is a marvel: a flat disc suspended in a shifting, prismatic nebula, its nights illuminated by the natural glow of its inhabitants. The land is rimmed by crystalline forests that pulse with gentle light, and Oakhaven, the capital, sprawls at the disc’s luminous heart. Here, bioluminescence is both birthright and social marker; the more dazzling your inner glow, the higher your rank. Nobility bathe themselves in light, their estates shielded by wards attuned to particular frequencies of brilliance.

The Solar Regency governs through ritual, etiquette, and relentless surveillance, but shadows thrive beneath luminous facades. Secret societies communicate through coded flashes or clandestine tea-room gatherings hidden from the ever-watchful gaze of the Regent’s agents. Commerce and daily life revolve around seasonal festivals, the most important being the Solstice Ball, where alliances are cemented and lives ruined in a single evening. Forged alliances, secret betrayals, and dueling couriers shape daily reality. Magic in Vespera is subtle, woven into the biology of its people and the architecture of their society: only those with exceptional light can activate certain wards or gain admittance to exclusive salons. Yet, those without such gifts, like the rare star-seeds, find their own ways to survive, slipping through cracks both literal and social.

The city itself is a tapestry of glowing bridges, shadowed alleyways, and resplendent plazas. Evenings are marked by public dances and private intrigues, and every cup of tea might conceal a cipher. As the Solstice nears, the city’s factions maneuver desperately, hoping to illuminate their fortunes or cast rivals into shadow.
