Protagonist
Starry
Starry is wiry and quick, with darting eyes and clever hands, every movement betraying a lifetime of caution. Their clothes are patchwork scraps, tied for agility rather than style, and their hair is tangled from crawling through dust-choked nooks. Beneath the grime, a spark of fierce willpower shines through.
Goal: To avoid detection during the current fairy sweep and find a more secure hiding place.
How it begins
Starry hurls themself behind a cracked button embedded in the baseboard, clutching a crumb nearly as big as their own head. Above, the booming voices of elves echo through the apartment, every word vibrating in Starry’s bones. Dust motes swirl in columns of golden light, but Starry’s eyes flick to the shadow under the stove where they spied flickering fairy light a moment ago. The floor shakes as an elven foot slams down only inches away, scattering breadcrumbs across the rough wooden planks. Starry presses closer to the wall, heart pounding, as the fairy bell’s silvery chime rings out, closer now.
"Check under the stove,"
calls an elven voice, each syllable a warning of doom. Starry’s breath freezes. Somewhere, a mouse skitters, and the faintest scent of honeyed magic fills the air.
About this world
Macropia is a vast, lush world ruled by elves, orcs, dwarves, and fairies, once invaded by humans from another realm. After a bitter war, elven magic shrank all humans to near-microscopic size, relegating them to the status of pests. Now, humans struggle to survive unnoticed in a world where every other race hunts or ignores them.
Macropia is a land of towering forest cities, sprawling beneath canopies so thick they feel like living cathedrals. The elves, proud and ancient, rule from glittering treetop palaces, their lives intertwined with the wild magic that permeates the land. Dwarves claim the roots and stone below, forging civilizations in tunnels beneath the earth, while orcs roam the plains and marshes, herding massive beasts. Fairies, once whimsical tricksters, now serve as enforcers, delicate yet deadly, using their powers to detect and exterminate the shrunken remnants of humanity.
Human civilization is all but erased, those who survived the curse hide in nooks and crannies, scavenging crumbs and cast-off bits in the shadow of oblivious giants. From behind skirting boards and inside walls, shrunken humans navigate a perilous world: a spilled cup becomes a flood, a falling book, an apocalypse. Elven households are ornate and sprawling, filled with traps and dangers for those too small to be seen. The social order is rigid, elves at the top, followed by dwarves and orcs, with fairies mostly outside the hierarchy, contracted as exterminators or informants. Occasionally, a human is discovered and kept as a pet or curiosity, but most are hunted as pests.
Magic is potent, reserved for the dominant races, and the curse is unbreakable. Technology is largely pre-industrial, but magic and craftwork fill the gaps, making life both wondrous and treacherous. The world outside is alive, dangerous, and utterly indifferent to the fate of humanity, which must cling desperately to the margins to survive.
