Protagonist

Portrait of Sera Valkyn

Sera Valkyn

Elf · Bridge Knight

Sera Valkyn carries a rigid intensity, her posture straight even at the edge of exhaustion. Tall and lithe, with dusky skin and cropped silver hair, she wears battered Bridge Knight armor daubed with root-magic glyphs. Her eyes, sharp and unyielding, betray both fear and fierce determination.

Goal: To investigate the cause of the bridge failures and prevent further collapse.

How it begins

Sera Valkyn slammed her gauntlet against the flickering rune-stone, voice tight as she barked,

“Report!”

Static crackled in reply, the guttering blue light casting jagged shadows along the swaying bridge. A gust of wind whipped her cloak, carrying the distant sound of splintering wood. She scanned the dim arch of the fossilised root, eyes burning from lack of sleep, and spotted a fracture spidering along its underside. Two of her squad struggled with patching resin, hands shaking. Another figure, lantern swinging, sprinted from the watch-hut, breathless.

“Sera! Another bridge, Rootspan North, gone dark!”

The void below rumbled, and the fragment beneath her feet pitched slightly, as if mourning a lost limb. Sera drew her sword, the blade humming with root-light.

“Hold the line,”

she snapped. She moved toward the fracture, boots scraping bone-hard bark, every sense straining for the next sign of collapse. Somewhere ahead, in the blue-lit dark, something moved beyond the reach of her lantern.

About this world

The Shattered Reach is a continent splintered by a magical cataclysm, its floating landmasses tethered by ancient, fossilised root bridges. An elite order of Bridge Knights guards these connections, but a new threat severs the bridges, isolating the outer fragments. The Reach teeters on the brink of collapse, both physically and politically.

The Shattered Reach is a land torn asunder centuries ago, when a surge of ancient magic fractured the continent into hundreds of floating fragments. Some are large enough for towns or forests, others barely a rock. Massive petrified root-bridges, remnants of a primeval world-tree, arc between fragments, providing the only safe passage. The space beneath the fragments is a swirling, storm-lit void; those who fall are lost forever.

Life clings to each fragment in clustered villages; the capital sits at the largest, the Heart Root. Society is stratified: city-folk hold power, while outskirters are seen as expendable. The Bridge Knights, sworn to defend the bridges and maintain unity, wield enchanted armor and root-forged blades drawn from the world-tree’s essence. Their order is respected, but stretched thin and plagued by internal rivalries.

Recently, bridges have gone dark, communications lost, lights extinguished, fragments drifting apart. Rumors of shadowy creatures, saboteurs, or the return of ancient magic haunt hushed conversations. The ruling council dithers, fearing panic, while the outlying fragments grow desperate. Supplies, news, and hope dwindle as the void’s storms intensify.

Magic in the Reach is tied to the roots; it’s potent but unpredictable, and tapping into it risks drawing the attention of what dwells beneath. Most people avoid open magic, but Bridge Knights use sanctioned rituals to sense bridge disruptions and wield root-magic in emergencies. Survival means vigilance, grit, and hard choices in a land where every step might be the last.
