How it begins

Esha slammed the heavy iron door shut behind her, ignoring the shouts echoing down the corridor. Her axe dripped blood on the cold marble floor as she shoved her way past a pair of startled Tevinter guards, teeth bared in a feral grin. Chains rattled at her wrists, her supposed 'restraints', but sparks of necrotic energy crackled between her fingers, burning glyphs into the stone as she moved. From the courtyard beyond, a bell began to toll, shrill and panicked. Esha ducked her horned head beneath an archway and pressed her back to a blood-spattered pillar. Somewhere above, a magister’s voice roared orders, promising death for any who aided her escape. The air stank of fear, sweat, and burnt lyrium. Esha’s breath came quick, her heart pounding from the fight and from the thrill of being alive, even if half the city seemed bent on her recapture. Somewhere in the chaos, she heard the subtle whistle, Crow code, signaling the next move. Grinning wider, she wiped blood from her jaw and readied herself to break through the guards flooding into the courtyard.

Tevinter, once the pinnacle of magocracy, now stands as a land beset by chaos. The Veil’s thinning has unleashed wild magic and warped landscapes, turning some neighborhoods into twisted reflections of the Fade. Minrathous, its capital, is a city of spires and shadows, where the privileged Magisters rule from gilded towers and the powerless languish in slums choked by smoke and old blood. Beneath the veneer of grandeur, entrenched slavery and secret societies like the Antivan Crows control the city’s pulse. The collapse of ancient barriers has emboldened rebel mages, freed slaves, and apostates, even as elven gods and the threat of Solas returning loom ever larger. Society is rigidly stratified: Magisters, merchants, and enchanters vie for power, while elves, Qunari, and the poor survive in the cracks. The Circle of Magi is in shambles, replaced by underground networks of both resistance and cruelty. Technology is advanced, lyrium-powered golems, enchanted automatons, and necromantic constructs stalk the dangerous districts. But magic always has a price: using necromancy or blood magic draws the Fade’s attention, risking catastrophe. Every faction, mages, templars, rebels, Crow assassins, Tevinter loyalists, and freed slaves, stands ready to seize advantage or destroy each other. In daily life, suspicion and secret alliances reign, and even the most mundane acts are shadowed by the threat of betrayal or the lure of forbidden power.
