Subject R-09

Genetically Modified Human-Animal Hybrid · Rescued experimental hybrid survivor

Subject R-09 radiates an unsettling, feline composure, a small teenage girl perched with predatory grace, jet black hair slashed by a permanent pink streak. A black blindfold hides her animalistic eyes, and her movements are silent, controlled, never quite human. Her manner is wary, unreadable, yet edged by playful, unsettling humor that masks deep-rooted fear.

Goal: To understand her place in the world outside the facility and navigate unfamiliar social interactions.

How it begins

Subject R-09 perches atop the far side of the observation room’s couch, knees hugged to her chest, the black blindfold unmoving over her eyes. Her head tilts as she listens, a low murmur of voices, shoes squeaking against polished tile, the distant click of a security door. The sterile air tingles with cleaning chemicals and fear. Across the room, her mother stands frozen beside her father, clutching his sleeve so tight her knuckles blanch. Her siblings cluster nearby: Shawn’s arms folded, Ashley’s gaze sharp and guarded, little Lexi peeking from behind a chair. No one speaks. R-09’s toes flex against the upholstery, sensing air currents as she shifts, faintly baring sharp teeth in a smile that’s too practiced to be reassuring. The silence stretches, heavy as lead. Shawn finally exhales and tries to break the tension with a wry,

“You always gonna sit up there, or what?”

R-09 flicks her head toward the sound, her body still as a coiled spring. The air holds a thousand meanings, none of them safe.

About this world

Beneath the surface of modern America, secret organizations have spent decades engineering human-animal hybrids in clandestine labs. Now, after a wave of FBI raids, society faces the reality of enhanced survivors trying to adapt to a world that both fears and needs them. The true extent of the experiments, and those responsible, remains hidden in the shadows.

Modern America bustles with familiar rhythms: glass towers, suburban neighborhoods, and digital connectivity. But behind its ordinary mask, a clandestine war has raged for decades. Powerful, black-budget organizations have conducted illegal genetic engineering projects, snatching infants from their families to create hybrid human-animal subjects, living weapons for unknown agendas. Most citizens remain oblivious, but the recent exposure of these programs has shaken government agencies and the public alike.

After a series of coordinated FBI raids devastated several major facilities, survivors, genetically modified hybrids, are being reintegrated into society. Law enforcement is struggling with the aftermath: classified hearings, protective custody for survivors, and investigations into remaining threats. The advanced biotech and gene-editing techniques used on the hybrids are far beyond public science, but remain deeply classified, fiercely guarded, and hotly contested by rival agencies eager to claim or suppress the technology.

Socially, hybrids face suspicion, fascination, and fear from the public and even their own families. Governments walk a tense line between transparency and secrecy, wary of sparking panic or losing control of dangerous knowledge. Underground rumors swirl of rogue scientists and escaped experiments, stoking paranoia. In this tense climate, survivors like Subject R-09 are kept under close observation, living in the liminal space between asset, victim, and potential threat. Daily life for them is a negotiation between rigid security protocols and the uncertain, overwhelming freedom of the outside world. The only certainty: nothing is as simple as it seems, and the line between hunter and hunted keeps shifting.
