Protagonist

Portrait of Daiki Sato

Daiki Sato

tiefling · reluctant messiah

The most striking thing about Daiki Sato is the wary energy in his eyes, always scanning, never at rest. Lithe and sharp-featured, his tiefling heritage shows in the subtle curve of hidden horns and an unnatural glow beneath his skin. He wears patched street gear and a battered raincoat, blending desperation with a survivor’s grit.

Goal: To sabotage the public mainframe and delete his biometric signature from the 'Chosen One' database.

How it begins

Daiki Sato yanks his hood lower as he squeezes through the crush of commuters spilling from the monorail station. Above him, his own digitized face flickers on a rain-streaked billboard, the words 'He Who Returns the Dead' pulsing in red across it. Street-monks in luminous blue robes begin chanting, their eyes locked on him even as he ducks behind a noodle kiosk. The scent of ozone and frying batter mixes with incense smoke as Daiki palms the cracked access card in his pocket, glancing at the data node’s metal hatch wedged between two blinking vending machines. A nearby monk raises a data-sutra; static hums in the air as Daiki presses himself tighter into the shadows. He can feel the itch of his horns beneath his cap, senses the city's endless surveillance crawling over his skin. A distant voice barks in digital Cantonese. Daiki knows there’s no time left, the mainframe relay sits just steps away, but the crowd thickens, and the chanting grows louder.

About this world

Neo-Shinjuku sprawls beneath perpetual neon rain, a metropolis where corporations lease bodies to ancient spirits and technology fuses with the arcane. Social order is dictated by the 'Velvet Accord,' a binding pact between corporate technocrats and otherworldly entities. Tieflings like Daiki are treated as bio-hazards, their existence monitored and controlled. Amidst ceaseless crowds, hidden cults, and omnipresent surveillance, even the city’s shadows have eyes.

Neo-Shinjuku is a megalopolis built atop the ruins of old Tokyo, its skyline threaded with luminous kanji and digital sigils. The city is divided into districts controlled by corporate syndicates, each acting as landlords to spirits who must lease synthetic vessels to interact with the world. In the Oku-Tokyo slums, failed divine-tech experiments have spawned unstable lineages, including tieflings like Daiki Sato, whose infernal traits are seen as glitchy liabilities. The Velvet Accord, a rigid treaty between human powers and spectral stakeholders, keeps the uneasy peace; violators are marked for erasure or exile. Public spaces bristle with surveillance drones and augmented reality overlays, while the underground teems with cults like the Echoing Saints, who exploit digital prophecies and hack the city's mainframes. Biometric data is everything, your identity, your fate, and your doom are written in code and spirit-ink. Street-monks, spiritual enforcers garbed in robes of LED-thread, hunt those who threaten the Accord, their devotion enforced by both faith and firmware. Life here is a negotiation of loyalties: to clan, sponsor, and the restless dead, all under the ceaseless drizzle of data and rain.
