Theron Ashgrove

Half-orc · Echo Warden

Theron Ashgrove stands broad-shouldered and imposing, tusks peeking from beneath a frostbitten beard. His heavy warden’s coat is battered but meticulously kept, marked with silver pins denoting hard-won authority. Eyes wary but not cruel, he carries sorrow and duty with the same stoic patience. The cryptic warning from his father's echo has introduced a personal stake into his duty, potentially shifting his priorities.

Goal: To understand the cryptic warning from his father's echo and identify the unseen threat.

How it begins

Theron Ashgrove pressed his gloved palm against the frost-laced doorframe, lantern swinging from his belt as he stepped inside the abandoned cottage. Broken glass crunched underfoot. The shadows inside shivered and shifted, coalescing into something almost human at the edge of the hearth. He drew a deep breath, not daring to look away as his father’s echo, pale and flickering, regarded him with familiar severity.

"You came,"

the echo said, voice layered with memories that hurt to hear. Cold crept into Theron’s bones as he scanned the room, eyes darting between the echo and the battered journal he’d left on the table. The echo shifted, gesturing to the journal.

"You’ll need that. There isn’t much time."

Theron’s hand hovered over the book, wary. Outside, the wind howled, and another echo flickered past the window. All warmth felt distant, replaced by the silent weight of what he might choose next.

About this world

Falrath is a frostbitten northern kingdom where winter plunges the land into three months of darkness. During the Long Dark, the dead return as echoes, spectral remnants that walk and converse with the living. The uneasy coexistence between the living and the echoes shapes every aspect of life, especially as tensions rise during the sunless months.

The Kingdom of Falrath sprawls between jagged ice cliffs, frozen rivers, and dense pine forests groaning beneath endless snow. For three months each year, the sun vanishes entirely, plunging towns and villages into perpetual twilight. Fires burn in every window, and lanterns line every street. Stone keeps and timber lodges huddle for warmth, their doors barred against the cold and what lurks in it.

The people of Falrath are resilient, shaped by centuries of harsh winters and stranger threats. During the Long Dark, the echoes of the dead manifest, shivering, translucent figures who appear at familiar haunts, driven by powerful memories. While some echoes simply relive old routines, others interact with the living, bringing comfort or unease. A strict social compact governs the living and the echoes: the dead may walk, but may not harm or coerce the living, and the living must respect the echoes’ presence, recording their names and deeds.

Falrath is ruled by a council of elders, but real power ebbs and flows with the changing seasons. Echo Wardens, specialists trained to manage the echoes, hold sway during the Long Dark, mediating disputes, laying unruly echoes to rest, and keeping records. Tensions simmer: religious groups decry the echoes as abominations, while some families seek to exploit them. Each winter brings more echoes and new dangers, some echoes become corrupted, riven by rage or unfinished business, lashing out at the living. The line between ghost and monster blurs. Magic is rare and dangerous, mostly wielded to bind or banish echoes, and always at a price. Technology is medieval: steel, lanterns, and the written word are as advanced as it gets. Daily life is wary, quiet, and steeped in ritual.
