Protagonist
Taiyō Usagui
Taiyō Usagui radiates mischievous energy and infectious cheer, her small frame belying the scars and spirit forged in Rukongai’s violence. With short blonde hair, bright orange eyes, and patched-up robes, she combines cuteness with grit. She moves with a quick, playful bounce, always ready with a joke or prank.
Goal: To gain entry into Seireitei and begin her training to become a shinigami captain.
How it begins
Taiyō Usagui bounced on the balls of her feet, hands balled into eager fists as she peered up at the towering white walls of Seireitei. The morning air tingled with spiritual pressure, thick enough to make her buzz with anticipation. A stern-faced gatekeeper eyed her suspiciously, clipboard in hand.
"Name?"
he demanded. Taiyō flashed her sunniest grin, her orange eyes gleaming.
"Usagui Taiyō! Future captain!"
she declared, rocking back and forth. The guard snorted, glancing at her short stature and patched-up sleeves. The queue behind her shifted impatiently, recruits whispering about the tiny girl from District 73. Taiyō shifted her weight, humming a silly tune as she watched a butterfly hover near the stone, waiting for the gatekeeper's verdict. A gust of reiatsu from a nearby applicant ruffled her hair, but she grinned wider, refusing to let anyone see her nerves.
"You sure you’re ready for this, kid?"
the gatekeeper muttered. Taiyō straightened her back and tried to look taller.
"Watch me!"
she piped, voice ringing through the morning. The clipboard scratched, the gatekeeper grumbling as he opened the heavy side-door just enough for her to squeeze past. Taiyō darted inside, eyes shining as the vast streets of Seireitei unfolded before her.
About this world
A revitalized Soul Society recovers from Aizen's betrayal and the Quincy invasion, urgently recruiting new shinigami from Rukongai. With peace fragile, energy crackles across the districts as spirits vie for training and purpose. Taiyō Usagui, a spirited newcomer, dares to dream of captaincy.
After the cataclysmic battles that shook the Soul Society, Seireitei stands vigilant, every gate closely monitored and patrols doubled. The Soul Society, comprised of the noble and disciplined Seireitei at its core and the sprawling, often lawless districts of Rukongai, is in a period of tense renewal. While Seireitei remains a place of immense spiritual order and tradition, Rukongai stretches for dozens of districts, each defined by its own unique chaos, poverty, or peace. The higher-numbered districts like 73, where Taiyō grew up, are notoriously dangerous, ruled by gangs and shaped by desperation. Here, only the strong or cunning survive.
Recently, the Gotei 13 (the thirteen court guard squads) have announced open recruitment, seeking to replenish their ranks and strengthen barriers to stave off new threats. Soul Reapers, or shinigami, wield spiritual weapons called zanpakutō, mastering techniques through intense discipline at the Shin’ō Academy. Young hopefuls from all walks of afterlife jostle for a rare chance to join, knowing that selection means not only safety but status and purpose.
Cultural life in Seireitei is formal and steeped in rigid hierarchy, while Rukongai’s denizens view shinigami with a mix of awe, resentment, and longing. The scars of betrayal by Aizen and the devastation wrought by Quincy invaders linger in both rumor and scarred cityscape. The spiritual atmosphere feels charged, and ambition pulses beneath the surface: to rise above one’s fate, to find belonging, or to protect those left behind. Magic in this world takes the form of kido spells, zanpakutō abilities, and raw reiatsu pressure, each dangerous and wondrous in their own way.
